I have a 2000 XJ 4x4 w/ 4.0ltr auto. At 92K and most items stock, I am getting concerned about a couple items. One, this vehicle never came with a fuel filter, at this milage should I look into replacing the pump? they only run 89.90 at Advance Auto. Looking to go to PA for T-day, am afraid it will crap out when I am in the worse situation. the vehicle runs great, no problems, just thinking about preventitive maintenance. Also, the Transmission. it shifts fine, have done regular fluid changes, but considering a complete flush and adjustment of the tranny at 92K. Good idea or not?
The last thing, the damn hub bearings, I have already changed out the DS, and found the other day that it is starting to seep oil out. I figure this is a bad thing, and found them art Advance Auto for $115 made by BCA National. Is there a better manufacture? Thanks in advance for any insight.

What do you mean this vehicle never came with a fuel filter? The fuel filter is on top of the fuel pump, and there is a screen on the fuel inlet to the pump. If you buy the mopar unit the pump and the filter come as an assembly. I would recommend buying the mopar assembly if replacement is needed. My fuel pump on my '98 started going out around 104k, but if you aren't experiencing any symptoms, or it isn't testing bad, don't replace it.
Why would you replace these things unless you are seeing symptoms that would give you an indication of an issue? From the tranny side, I asked a shop about the flush once, and they weren't too jazzed up that it did much for you. As a matter of fact, the filter on these vehicles is just a screen, and I was told that if you change the fluid every couple oil changes you shouldn't even need to worry about the filter. |

I wouldnt worry about the complete flush since you have done other tranny fluid changes, but it would be a good idea to do a band adjustment - especially if it has never been done befor

LoL 92K on a cherokee.....is it broken in yet? You have a 200k+ mile vehicle if you treat it right. What will go first are the power windows regulators and door locks etc.
The only way it doesn't have a fuel filter is if some one took it out/off or some slacker at the maufacturing plant was taking one too many tokes, was drunk or playing poker on the assembly line. Personally, I believe in changing the tranny fluid if it looks dirty or it reaches the recommended change interval. I wouldn't replace the fuel pump unless it was faulty. From what I've read on auto lubricants as you stress the fluids (extreme heat or cold) you deplete the additives. One of the advantages of synthetic lubricants is reportedly that they inherantly require less additives to do the same job that so called natural mixtures require. If you have a metal tranny filter I would think it could be air pressure cleaned. They're generally not that expensive either way. hope that helps... safe trip |

You would have to check a service manual but I would assume it's an in-line canister type fuel filter under the vehicle in front of the fuel tank.
your best bet is to get a repair manual at a local parts shop if you're planning to do some repairs. hope that helps |
