Air Flow Meter

My Airflow meter on my 93 mr2 turbo just died my car has 81,000 miles on it and the new part from Toyota lists for more than $600.00 but i can get it through my work for $500.00. That kind of dough makes me want to know what alternatives i have as far as aftermarket performance parts and how much they cost and the difficulty of installing them. Anyone who has information that could help me would be greatly appreciated. This is my only form of transportation and i would like to get my baby purring again. Thanks!

The only way to get rid of the AFM is:

HKS VPC ~ only available used for $500-$7000

OR

Going to a complete stand alone engine management system.

ive heard about the vpc and was curious if the install is complicated and should be done by a pro or if it is something that i could do at my house? Does it need to be tuned on a dyno or is it plug and play.

The VPC is relatively easy to install:

There is a head unit that goes in the interior with 3 wiring harnesses that go to the engine bay.

The main harness simply plugs into the OEM ECU and the plugs that did go into the OEM ECU gets plugged into the other side of the harness. Super simple.

Then 2nd wiring harness goes to a supplied MAP sensor. This needs to get an air pressure reading from the intake manifold. You can simply just T into the OEM map sensor vac line.

The 3rd wriing harness goes to a temp sensor. This sensor needs to be installed into the throttle body inlet. The hole for this sensor will need to be drilled and tapped.

As for "tuning" it ... there is no tuning. It replaces the OEM AFM.
You just install this and drive.

The GCC is a separate piece and you do not need it.

I went to your site and checked it out your cars are dope my wife thinks the white one is so hot! mine is red, T-top, turbo with ADR GT sport 17" wheels, Falken FK-04 GRb tires, turbo Xs blowoff valve, Apex'i turbo timer, HKS super megaflow intake, HKS superdragger exhaust, nology wires, Denso iridium sparkplugs and Tein HA coilovers with upper pillow ball mounts. Project is not done tho trying for near 300hp at the wheels, got some more work to do.

Some advice:

Get NGK Copper plugs (#6097) ASAP. Get the Iridiums out of there!

I would also recommend the OEM BPV or the HKS SQQV valve for a BOV.

... 300 rwhp you are going ot need an upgraded intercooler, turbo and fuel ... let me know if you need any advice.

whyare those copper plugs so damn cheap?
they offer more performance than iridium how is that?

what intercooler fits in the stock location that will support 300 rwhp? which one are u running or do you have a custom setup?

I do not have ICQ.

The plugs are cheap because they are copper. That's what they make pennies out of you know
Copper is the BEST conductor of electricity, the down side is they wear out fast. I would recommend changing your plugs every oil change (3000 miles). The iridiums, with their tiny little tips, have been known to break apart and damage pistons & valves.

The GReddy IC is what I am using. Fits in the stock location and will suport over 400 rwhp.
The Spearco is a bit better, but more $$.
