Tracing with IP Adress

I am trying to trace some with his ip adress which i have since he emailed me. I bought some rims off ebay and am trying to get my money back since he never sent them. What are my options to trace this guy, are there any programs that work to get me a street address? Thanks

Re: Tracing with IP Adress

Report it to eBay for non-delivery. That'll do more for getting your money back than tracing his IP. Don't you also have his mailing address for sending the money to him?

As of right now I havent reported him to ebay, I am givng him until Saturday night for the rims to get here (10-9-04). Right now I am trying to get his address to verify if he really does live in ME. I dont have his mailing address because i used paypal (i know they have fraud prevention too). Thanks for the suggestion though.

Tracing of IP address will yield at best the corperation that owns the subset of IP address. This means you will need to go through a lot of legal redtape to actually get his personel information as the IP address is leased by a company which leases it out to its subcriber for the internet.

The company would have logs of when and what user logs on with the corresponding IP address but it would require quite a lot of red tape to be released. Just thought you should know what extent the IP address will yield for you if u do pursue the problem.

Yeah, you'll pretty much have to sue his ISP to get them to release him IP address. And as for the future, buy things like that from people with hundreds if not thousands of positive feedbacks.

No there is no real real IP address each user is assigned to. Because we have a finite amount of IP address, you basically need to be allocated a small subset (an organization) and this IP addresses are leased on a "need" bases to users who needs it to maintain a connection through the outside world. There is ways where you use NAT and that but that's a different story, most ISP will assign you an IP address which is unique to the world but only for finite number of time (as in x hrs or y days, etc) before it expires where they can renew it or reassign you with a new IP address (this is of course assuming it is DHCP assigning).

If their IP address is static then it has been reserved specifically for them and will not change until a certain given circumstances.

Basically IP address will only give information to whom it belong to (eg the organization) but the individual who it is leased to is subjected to the organization's fair usage policy but to get personal information would be tough, very tough, but good luck in your attempts and keep us inform of the status.

Re: Tracing with IP Adress

I had the same IP address ever since I signed up for service from Comcast. It still shows up as comcast on the trace, that's why I said that he would basically have to sue the ISP. I know that AOL assigns IP addressess as the user connects, they don't have permanent ones.

You can obtain any IP providing you can access the right mapping server. Basically what I'm trying to say it you need not sue a company to get a release of IP address, you can obtain it, you cannot obtain personal information regarding an individual to an IP address as the subset of IP address is leased to an organization which further leases it out to its customers.

Also the length of the IP address and whatever arrangement it comes to at anyone's end regarding IP is between the organization and yourself. The lease of IP address is not definate, its pending the computer usage policy and other terms and also the leasing policies which is implemented when it allocates individuals the IP address. This policies vary from organization to organization.

Re: Tracing with IP Adress

In any case, you'll get 60 days to report him. Any longer than that is your bad.
