Better Tranny Fill question

2001 Trooper

OK, installed a transmission cooler, and after reading/searching, I was able to refill the transmission fluid. Only about 1/4 cup came out during the process.

I warmed the car up, then removed the fill plug and expectedly nothing came out. While it was running I pumped about 1/2 quart into the tranny. Pulled the hose and a whole lot poured out. When it got down to a dribble I put the plug back in. Drove around the block.

When I returned i decided to check the fluid again *after noticing I forgot the copper washer - and when I removed the bolt a little more than a dribble came out.....I put the plug back in (with the washer) and sealed everything up.

So...the question is - the 2nd time should I have let it drain until fluid stopped coming out or was it OK to leave it, I guess somewhat overfilled?

Thanks

Andrew

As long as it wasn't a HEAVY stream of ATF from the fill port, you'll be fine. Just make sure to have the truck on a level surface, fully warmed and running in neutral. I filled my 2002 until it started to pour out the fill port & then plugged it as fast as I could. ATF was streaming out just slightly by that point I got the plug in. I made a little copper "hook" out of a pc of 1/4" copper tubing for filling purposes. It helps keep the ATF from running down your fill tube as you fill this LOVELY design .
G/luck

Thanks!

It was a light flow of ATF. Garage is fairly level.
