I have a 1996 Lumina the tail lights brake lights and turn signals do not work basically all lights in the back of the car are out....can someone help me out with this one...when i bought the car it didn't have a radio so i put in an aftermarket ..could there be wiring behind the radio that is not connected that caused this?. I have checked every fuse i can find in the car with a light tester...dashboard fuse box and both under the hood...can anyone off some advice on this??

Does the highmount work? If it does, then you most likely have a turn signal switch out. If it doesn't, check the wiring to the rear (along the passenger side floor) for continuity.

What do you mean the highmount..is that the center brake light in the rear window?.....how do I know if the turn signal switch is working is there a way to test it..like jumping across it or something? adn i guess changing the switch involes pulling the steering wheel and removing the air bag?

Re: 1996 Lunina tail lights brake lights
DANG!!!! I have a 1995 LUMINA that all works EXCEPT the BRAKE lights. BUT.......BELIEVE it or not if i pull back on the BRIGHT switch lever WHILE i have my foot on the brake pedal......The brake lights work! You really think the turn signal switch is bad? And YES the middle back window brake light comes on no matter what! Rick

Re: 1996 Lunina tail lights brake lights
The left and right tail light signals are routed through the turn signal switch before going to the lights. This enables you to brake and signal, have the parking lights on and signal, etc. If you look at most cars today there's a noticable delay in the highmount and other tail lights coming on. A corvette is by far the most noticable delay, to me.
The contacts in this switch were kinda poorly made. Some people have reported bending them back into place and it works for years. Other times nothing short of replacing the switch works. The switch is in the column, and yes, steering wheel removal is required. Although an airbag can take *some* abuse, I personally wouldn't just toss it on the ground after prying it out with a sharp screwdriver. Take good care of these and they won't blow up in your face. Hope this helps out some. |
