Hyundia Transmission Fluid

Is ATF+3 OK TO USE IN MY SONATA, because i was told it had to be purchased from dealer only? so can i just use atf+3 from the locale parts shop, and still be ok in warranty?

If you want to buy a new transmission, go right ahead. I have heard that ATF+3 will get you buy if you are just topping off, but not for a drain and fill. (emphasis that "I have heard" but have not seen, so don't mark my words) I have sold several transmissions to shops that put in Dextron 3 or ATF3. Some have not even made it out of the parking lot. If you are that cocerned about price, check for the SPIII fluid at a Kia or Mitsubishi dealership, and check their prices, it is the same fluid for all 3 car lines. One day an aftermarket company might make this fluid, but I doubt it will be anytime soon, since Hyundai has put this fluid in from the beginning. Be forwarned though, if you do put in ATF3, and your car does run for awhile, but your transmission goes out in the future, you will be buying that transmission. When we send the cores back to Hyundai, they do test the fluid that is in it for any contaminents or any foreign fluids or additives and it will come back on you. I have seen it happen. Just spend the extra money and buy the SPIII, might save you a lot in the future.

lowsonoma is correct, Hyundai will send the tranny in to specialist to check the fluid within it, and if they find that its not Hyundais, the cost goes to you to fix it. There are two people currently going through this problem (mentioned in other forums) and Hyundai refuses to honor their tranny fix since they put in the wrong stuff.
So again, be careful. My sig says it all. Don't go getting a quick cheaper fix, it will cost you in the long run.

Guys,, I have a big problem with my tranny. I have a Scoupe 94 automatic and when I bought it 3 days after begin to slipp, so I bought a used one for other ar that was crashed a work fine. After a week the tranny begin to slip to neutral sometimes. Ive heard that the fluid influence very much on the tranny behavior. Also I heard that Hyundai has his own tranny fluid,, so I call to my local dealer Hyundai and the said me that the fluid that they put on the dealer was mercon dexronIII, and my car have this fluid right now. When I asked them for the Hyundai tranny fluid the said me that they never heard anything about that. WHat can I do to solve my problem cause I cheked all the sensors and the computers on my car and everything is ok.

Could be a number of things. Either way, your dealer doesn't know what the hell they are talking about. It's either not a real Hyundai dealership, or some strange things going on down there in Puerto Rico. Any check engine lights, stored codes????

ok, a check engine light comes on, I went to a mechanic and he said me that the code was from the oxygen sensor and the coolant sensor,, so i replaced it with new ones. After that non check engine light comes on.

You might want to try to find another Hyundai dealer that knows what they are talking about and change the transmission fluid. Part number for the Hyundai fluid is 00230-11000, so give that to them if they don't know what it is.

Just to let you all know a quick check to see if you have the correct fluid is to pull the dipstick out wipe it on a peice of paper what color is it ...if it is red it is not spIII....spIII is red out of the bottle and as soon as it reaches temperature it turns brown this is normal
