Engine missfiring! HELP!

I have a '95 Beretta z26. Car shakes occasionally when accelerating up hills and when idling. I've heard of problems with the coil packs and EGR on this car. This could be anything from spark plugs to injectors. Has anyone had this problem and know how to fix it with out exhausting every possible option?

When was the last time all the spark plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap changed? If it has been a while, start by changing those items. Since you stated that it missfires going up hill, you are putting additional load on the engine, signs or worn out plugs and wire stuff. You can also check your MAF sensor, with the engine idling, tap the side of the MAF sensor, and listen to see if the engine stumbles or any change, if it does your MAF sensor shot.

Definatly agree with Tableman, do that stuff and then make sure to get your timing tuned and you will be set to go.

Car has coil packs (no dist.) known to be shitty...any thoughts? EGR?

Ok, car has coil packs, you will still need to make sure spark plugs and wires are in good shape.
Symptoms of a bad EGR Valve, if stuck closed, your will notice you will burn more gas and maybe a lost in performance, and eventually you cat convertor will become plug and then you will really use a lot of gas. if it is stuck open you will notice a lost in power, a lot. Some cars will just stall out when you give them gas, when EGR Valve is stuck open. If it is intermediate, you will notice the car chugging when you are trying to acclerate, like coming on to a highway. I would still start with the wires and spark plugs. Make sure they are in good shape and gapped properly

Forgot to mention, the coil pack problems with GM was the cars would all of a sudden quit, and then would not re-start. Then you get a tow and as soon as the car is drop off, most of them would restart making the shop think you are nuts. Or if it is damp outside the car won't start. If you get a Haynes manual for it, I think that year you could display any engine codes thru check engine lite, but you have to put a jumper across two connections on the OBC plug but I forget which ones.

Autozone can check the coils for you if you take them in. I would clean the IAC valve. This is a common issue. They get pretty gummed up and then stick in one position. Good Luck.
