Unhappy electric mirror switch replacement

Has anyone ever replaced the mirror switch for a 2000 Passat? Someone broke off the mirror adjustment knob at the carwash (and failed to tell me about it)...I noticed it after it was way too late to complain. Anyway...I bought a new switch...but it doesn't seem like it's that easy to pop out the old one without doing some serious damage to the palstic around the door latch. Any advice would be much appreciated!!

I had the same problem on a Jetta i previously owned, i ended up taking the whole door panel off to replace it. I would like to know where you bought the part from though because now i have the same problem in my 99 Passat

Re: electric mirror switch replacement

The part was available at the dealer...but it was about $30 if I remember correctly. Might be able to get it cheaper on-line somewhere...

O.K. I hope this reply is not too late... Those knobs are really easy to breake. I've got the knob from the dealer as you did and replace it myself. How ? Easy..you don't have to take the whole pannel off!!!
The dealer was gonna charge me £40 ...ha ha ha!!
Here is the deal, you take a electric screw driver and a screw, screw the screw ( not too deep!!) into the knob unit and the pull from the screw the whole thing out(be aware: hold the door handel unit as it might come out too). That's how i did it ..simple..you don't need the old one anyway...so distroy it !!
If you want anymore tips ..get in touch!!

HAHAHAHahhah!
there is one philips screw that holds the door handle/mirror switch pannel on to the door pannel and its all also held on by clips. You need to remove the whole door pannel (2 screws on bottom and 3 bolts behind handle).

I have the same problem with my '99 passat. Are you sure about the screw Idea? Wow. I've been missing the part for years now. I don't even know how it broke off.
