Question anti freeze leaking out of back of engine?

My 23yr old daughter has a 99 tauras with a 302? engine, she looses anti freeze out of the back of the engine SOMEWHERE they cant figure it out she just lost most of it last night, but she has been driving it around for a while with no leaking, however she had this problem a year ago and couldnt figure it out then it just went away, the motor has around 114 000 mi on it and when she bought it ,with high miles, her mistake not mine; she found out later it was a rental car from jersy[we live in p.a.] and that it obviously NEVER had any maintinence, my husband never saw chocolate brown antifreeze in his life
anyone know where this leak may be? the heater never worked either.she has taken it to two garages and they must be too old fasioned because they dint know either ,and told her she needs a new engine, although I agree.

Leaking coolant doesn't mean the vehicle needs a new engine. But if you drive it without and overheat, it might soon. Someone needs to get serious with it and track down the problem. Since the heat doesn't work that might be the area to look at first. If it was a rental car that likely was some time ago because rental agencies usually sell off cars with miles over 25K or so, sometimes less. Service neglect is commonplace, a serious inspection should have been done before your daughter bought it. Maybe she should decide if it is worth getting back in shape.

I have a 92 taurus gl, and I have been leakin antifreeze for a while. I have tried fixing it, i changed the water pump, water hoses, thermostat, but it still leaks out of the back of the engine. I cant get a good angle to see where it is coming from. All i can see is that antifreeze is leakin ontop of my exhaust and steam is comin out from under my hood. I have no idea what to do. PLEASE HELP

Leaking head gasket, freeze out plugs any one of a dozen things could be the problem or it could be a combination.Chocolate brown antifreeze sounds like alot of stop leak. And too much of it could explain the heater not working that stuff will clog heatercores prettt badly.Take it to a good quality shop and have drain and flush the coolant system and get a pressure check done. That should tell them where the leak is.You may get luckt and it be a 2 dollar freeze plug or it may be a 1200+ head gasket job.

Re: anti freeze leaking out of back of engine?

i had the same problem with my 99 taurus last week.it was leeking and not getting any heat. there are 2 heater lines on the firewall running out of the heater core. they are rubber and metal with comperssion fettings on them. there are a few ways to correct it you can cut the metal and replace with a rubber hose or use us jb weld and fix it temporaraly, the dealer part is between one 1 and 2 hundred dollars for each line. as for the lines they are right above the exhaust and the fluid sprays right onto the manifold and makes it steam. hope this helps
