Re: Chiltons or hayes (sp?) ...

I have the chiltons for the Jeep and a Haynes for the Cougar. I don't find much difference between them. Both have good general information.

you won't find some of the specialized info in any of the consumers manuals. only way to access that is a factory manual, Mitchell or AllData manuals.

Easiest one of those three is the factory manual - get it from the dealer.

Re: Chiltons or hayes (sp?) ...

I have a Haynes for my Jeep, I have looked at a Chiltons for something for my father in laws Olds Achieva and I found that it was too hard to look for it in Chiltons, seeing how it was for all GM Automobiles, it was hard to locate, b/c u have to look for the Vehicle then for the instruction on what u need, but I dunno I think u might be able to get Chiltons for exact models as well. but I am also going to invest in Factory Service Manual.

If you do your own work spend the money and buy a Factory Service Manual. I buy for every Vechile I own. I bought my XJ and ZJ Manuals for about $70 each. I do all my own work and found chilton and Haynes are very generic. Jeep manuals are more expensive than others I have bought but well worth it.

I have a haynes manual and find it covers everything that a non-profesional mech can repair. chiltons have thier good points but are difficult to use at times. 70 dollars sounds good for dealer, my cadillac manual from dealer cost 189 dollars!

I think one has to evaluate how much maintance work, and servicing you are willing to do. As a good self confiendent backyard mechanic, semi pro, or professional who's tackle the more difficult tasks and repairs, a dealers service manuals will pay themselve of almost immediately. Otherwise just as general maintance and upkeep, Chilton or Hayne Manuals are very adequate. Hayne's manual being the lower priced.
