but putting that tranny probly not the best idea you should just go BIG AND LITE then mod that because your not getting 200hp out of grand am stock parts with mods and if you did it wouldint last |

Re: grand am turbo, upgrades?
i dont know to much about the turboed motor in the early GA's, i know they are rated at 160hp. Maybe if you get some type of boost controller you might be able to run some more boost on it. I dont even know what turbo they use, i was thinking maybe stuff from a dsm might work. Search around the net somemore, you will probably find some info.

Re: grand am turbo, upgrades?
but the point is you would have to rebuild the turbo and the motor or the engine is not going to last if you put more boost on it.. the engines old and worn
probley just start trowing rods.. gasket blown and pumps over pump belts wont have the grip they should you really cant just start puttting hp on cars with out the right kind of follow-up upgrades like if you just trow 100pound shot of nitro of cours the cars gonna fly the first time but most likey it wont go much further shot drive train or gasket blown wich would leave you with a warped head or timeing chain break or cam rod bent valves bent so many things could happen when playing with alot of hp its not like your going to put a cold air intake or some kind of mod where hp is no higher the 10-20 but you want to go from one 150 to 200 and mind the car probly not putting out the whole 150 because every things VERY WORN in... so your gonna put a big boost turbo in or allow more boost with the old turbo a big boost turbo would give you so much hp you would blow something and giveing your self more boost with the old turbo would be a better idea since your just gonna destroy every thing any way besides wouldnt you want to rebuild the old turbo give your self more hp then see how the car handles but think of me when you blow the engine and you want to sell that brand new trubo |

Old Friend of mine had a 84 ish Skyhawk, with the Trubo 1.8. He was able to get a larger turbo for it (I can't rember what it was off), plus an adjustable boost controler. That thing was Wicked fast for what it was (would break the tires loose in all 5 gears...lol) fun to drive but torque steer was a Pain.... Ran low 13's last I knew, he was gonna try for 12's but had problems with Fuel Injectors.
Apparently he couldn't find injectors to supply enough fuel for the extra boost & kept popping holes in his pistons (detonation). So, I'd just keep the stock setup... Rebuild everything. Then try to find the boost adjuster (Wastegate???) so you can turn up the boost over factory specs. (friend was running like 20-25 psi). That might put you into the 200 mark, (doesn't take much more PSI to make more HP with a turbo). Good Luck. |

Re: grand am turbo, upgrades?
well i think im going to take a manual tranny of a sunbird or cavalier that have the same motor but not boosted. i think the turbo they have is a garret t-8 er sumthin. well i guess i can set my goal at 160 hp with a cai, and custom exhaust.

Re: grand am turbo, upgrades?
this car is all about budget, mind you it cost me 60 dollars, lets see here.... 60 dollar car, 30 dollars gas to get it towed, needed an alternator so i replaced it, the alternator i put in was no good, so now i just give it a boost and start whenever i wanna drive it around a bit, so the tranny swap cai and exhaust should take this entire build to 500 bux

Re: grand am turbo, upgrades?
duh..if you jump the car and it starts then drive it and it drives for any longer then 5 min then the alternator is not bad
if you do not know that i dont think you should be looking for a turbo not to sound mean but turbo probley would be the last thing on the car you should be looking for if it cost 60$ and it needs to be jump to drive it |

Re: grand am turbo, upgrades?
i dont think ive ver had it running for more then 5 minutes, i haev tried a couple different batteries and the saem thing keeps happening. and the only reason it cost 60 bux was becuz it broke down at sum guys house and he said jus giev me 60 bux for it.
