ignition system

truck runs for thirty or 40 seconds and starts sputterin and then dies eventually 1st time: truck shutoff after driving it, stopping, letteing her idle for about a minute and it just shot off. I went back to it about 3 hours later and tried starting it. After abour 5 minutes of cranking she fired but ran very rough so i shut it off went back bout 5 hours laterr and it started right up, ran for thirty seconds wonderfully. I tapped the gas to idle her down and it idled for 10 seconds and shut off. I let it set for two days and it ran fine for 3 minutes and started shaking eventually died Since i got the truck i have replaced the ignition/exciter box three times. When the ignition system failed before i was driving down the road and it just died with no starting back. Could this be the wallet wreching exciter box again???

Got any more info like what year and engine do you have, and is it EFI or carb'ed? After it quit, did you still have strong spark out of the coil or at the plugs? Have you checked fuel delivery? Any recent tuneups or fuel filter changes?

Also just curious, what led you to replace the exciter or igniter 3 times? . Did you replace with new or used parts? Did you replace the coil each time or at all? I have seen around a million miles total on a herd of mid to late 80's pickups, some mine, some other folk's, and have only seen one bad ECU, and 2 igniters. Much of this representing lots of rough driving and Alaskan weather extremes. They can go bad but I would think 3 genuine failures on 1 rig is a little much.
