StUpId ShIfTiNg

my friend has a 92 eclipse a/t and when placed in drive it will not go fast at all, when floring it, he hits like 15 mph in 20 seconds! so he has to put it in low (i dont know what its called on a 1g DSM) and from there once he gets up to speed, then he can shift into drive and it acts normally. he says something about a transaxle computer, i didnt know that existed but i have an ECU for his car, will a new ECU fix it?, or is it the "transexle computer"...help me.
