97 Rodeo Electrical Problems

I am having some electrical problems with my rodeo. My brother tried to install a CD player and we must have shorted something out, because I do not have any dash lights for my panel, but it does show when I have my cruise on, and anything else that lights up, I just can not see my gauges. We put the factory stereo back in, but now we cant not get that to work, it lights up like it is on, but all you hear is a popping noise and when you turn on the headlights the stereo with cut off. I am curious if maybe we shorted a relay or some kind of module, if anybody has any useful information I would greatly appreciate it.
