grandparents or parents war stories

thought it be interesting to post some of the stories that you were told millions of times as a kid, and they didn't become cool until you were a young teenager.

my grandfather was in the korean war, also known as "the forgotten war"
my grandfather ws in the army.
he was gaurding a certain area and boom, he gets shot from the back, the bullet travels through and across his waist which spends him around. he then see's the enemy running away. as he's yelling out of pain, he begins to fire, and fire and fire until he's completley out of amo.

my grandad says " i know i killed him, i let off too many shots in one area for him not to be dead"

he then fell to the ground and woke up in the hospital.

again going back to war after recovery

and there's another one too

Re: grandparents or parents war stories

I remember speaking with my grandfather shortly before his death. He had been stationed at Pearl Harbor and Midway on a sub during WWII. I asked exitedly if he had any war stories he could tell me. He thought for a moment and said that once, while climbing the sub's conning tower, he slipped and smashed his chin on one of the rungs and needed stitches...and another time he cut the hell out of his finger opening a tin of cookies in the galley which required stitches also.

Apparently his duties at Pearl Harbor and Midway did not coincide with any events of note that occurred in either location...

My granparents on the other side were both in the RAF. My grandmother as a secretary and my grandfather as a pilot. He was apparently involved with the defense of Malta.

Re: grandparents or parents war stories

My grandpa served near the end of WWII as chief in a submarine of the US navy. He told me lots of stories about him being in the Phillipines and trying to reclaim the Phillipines from Japan at the battle of Leyte Gulf. he also served in the Korean War and the first two years of the Vietnam War. Hes still alive to tell all these stories.

Re: grandparents or parents war stories

My grandparents narrowly escaped being chucked on Somes Island by the New Zealand government during WWII, just because they were born to Italian immigrant parents, other Italians weren't so lucky. I'm pretty sure that's how my grandad dodged going to war as well.

My Uncle did fight in Vietnam, but never speaks of it and I don't blame him really.

Re: grandparents or parents war stories

I had a great grandfather and a couple of great uncles serve in the NZEF during WW2. Great grandfather was wounded by the Afrika Korps in Egypt (I think.). A great uncle died when he was taken prisioner by the Italians but they forgot to put the POW standard on the ship, so the British bombed it, I understand.

The other great uncle is still going at 92 (or so).

Ironicly, great grandfather was killed in 1997 when he was in a head on collission with an army Unimog. At the Gerrys didn't get him. Have his tankard sitting here in front of me, actually. C Troop, 25 Battery RNZA.

We have a family friend who was in Vietnam with 161 Battery. I never ask him about the war but sometimes he talks about it. Very interesting.

Re: grandparents or parents war stories

My recently departed grandfather (last week) was a glider pilot in the RAF during WW2. He would fly mammoth gliders large enough to hold tanks, sometimes having to land them on land that was set with special traps to prevent airplanes from landing, sometimes while the ground had been smoked over so he couldn't see where he was landing. The fact that made this even more tricky was that you only had one shot at landing, you couldn't come back for another pass, once the tow plane let you go you where going to land like it or not. I heard these stories mainly from my mother, as my grandfather never talked about the war except to apparently call it "one big game". Other stories included the time he was making silver nitrate in his labratory at work (he was a chemist) in order to put on the back of a mirror he was making (to make it reflective), but he left it sitting and it became volitile so when he picked it up next it exploded, burning his hands and ruining the freshly painted labratory. He was always busy, up until his death in France on vacation so there were so many stories they could fill a book. He always had something on the go, and one of the sad things about it was that me and him had been corresponding about a project he had been working on (refining a continuous distillation process for small scale ditilleries) and he was making progress on it, but he died before he could finish it so I sort of feel sad that he never managed to finish his project.

He was a remarkable man, and led a life no less remarkable. I love hearing the stories.

Re: grandparents or parents war stories

well another story is that, when my grandfather went back towar after bieng shot. him and his team were on the move. they began to fire and during the battle he was shot in the helmet. the bullet bounced off of his helmet and it knocked him to the floor. it was after this that he got out of the war.

he says that the bullet hitting his helmet was a whole lot worse then getting shot in the waist

Re: grandparents or parents war stories

I actually met two WWII veterans, one an ex-POW and the other was one of the Germans that guarded at the same prison camp. When asked why the guard had never shot at the prisoners, the guard confessed, "We had no ammo during the last year, the bullets were fake, made from wood." The look on their faces was priceless. They actually became friends, too.

Grandfather served Army, and was a Sergant on the field in France. I believe he was part of D-Day although I am not certain.
