1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. - 4x4 quadra drive
45k miles on it. Problems are as follows:
Brakes and Rotors - every 10k miles the rotors warp and the car shakes violently when braking. I will swith to aftermarket brakes and rotors per other recomendations. Power window motors - both driver and passenger side went out. Transmission problem - at 45k miles the check engine light came on and I noticed that the car clunked and jerked when put into drive and also clunked and jerked when shifting from 1st to 2nd. also, I believe the overdrive wasn't working. Anyway, the speed sensor needed to be replaced ($280 incl. labor). My problems have been pretty consistent with this review: http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Re...d=3179&src=vip |

have the same jeep. I complained about the brakes to the dealer and they covered them the first time. There is a TSB out on the brakes. I have since switched to slotted rotors and ceramic pads (aftermarket) and have been happier. Also, i had numerous problems with my transmission having very sloppy shifts and jumping when going from park to Drive. I had an extended warranty with mine (i probably had it in the shop 12-15 separate times for the tranny alone) . There is a new flash out to reprogram the computer for the tranny. Take a look at this site http://www.wjjeeps.com/tsb.htm it is helpful. Also, you might want to consider an extended warranty for your Jeep.

Thanks for the reply
Could you please go into detail about your tranny problems? Do you think mine is the begining of a bigger problem? Did the 'speed sensor' replacement take care of the 'jerk'?
Thanks in advance! |

They replaced a lot of parts with no positive results. I don't even remeber what all the parts they replaced. I know the relearned the shift patterns a few times and replaced a speed sensor and the PCM. I beleive they also replaced a "solenoid pack"??. I got the feeling that they guys at Jeep weren't real sure how to fix the problem. I used to get a real noticeable clunk with the 1-2 shift sometimes. My tranny for the most part has shifted smoothly for the last year or so (i have 112K on my WJ). I will try to remeber to look at the last repair I had the tranny (since I have not had any problems since) and post it tomorrow.
Most of these problems will not cause damage to the tranny, they are just not as smooth as they should be. Your tranny is electronic (as opposed to bands) so all the shifts are controlled by learned patterns from computers, it might be as simple as reprogramming your computer.???

he is right, find some slotted or drilled rotors, these dicipate heat much quicker than the factory "vented" rotors, when you get these rotors find the right pad for them... if you get the wrong friction material, you will eat your $200 rotors up QUICK. as for the rest of your issues, i wish i could help
