4 Banger Upgrade Question

OK, at the risk of becoming flame bait. I just baught a 91 mustang LX 4 banger, I got a hell of a deal at $450 with minimal body damage, only needs a new bumper cover and a new fender. as for engine, I think I got sucha good deal cause it needs a new freeze plug, which happens to be the one behind the fly wheel, I have access to a shop and that will be done tomorrow. So now for the real question:

Can I put a turbo on this car like from an SVO, or do I need to invest in an engine out of a turbo coupe? If I need a new engine, what all do I need, is it just a straight swap in, or do i need some other parts?

Secondly, How much work is it to swap in a V8?

Re: 4 Banger Upgrade Question

not much a swap for the 8 or SVO motor.
swapping the SVO motor is a better idea then boosting the current 4 banger.

The SVO's had a slightly different block, and the head was definately different. the bottom end thou, basically the same albiet weaker rods and pistons. Yes you can put a turbo from a SVO onto the engine, but......... won't be smog legal because your putting older parts on a newer engine. Also alot of these people that are saying put a V8's don't know much about the SVO mustangs. Matter of fact, I'm willing to bet that alot of these people also didn't know that there was Fox body GT's with turbo 4 cyclinders.

Now you can build up a 2.3L block to make some very nice hp numbers. they are capable of pushing 250~350hp. Of couse, alot of these people that was never into SVO's don't know that. And they also was about 200lbs lighter than the GT's. Unfortantely, the SVO group at Ford was really crappy about supporting the SVO mustangs. They was also very lousy at selling the SVO mustangs. They didn't have a marketing section that knew how to deal with the public. All SVO had was a mustang with a very nice package, that performed well. Matter of fact, it's the first Fox body mustang to get 5 lugs, and quad shocks. It also was the first fox body mustang delveloped to push the evelope of technology at the time. You want to convert to a 5 lug mustang, get the SVO parts.

The Turbo GT's was absolute garbage compared to the SVO's. And the wimpy 4.2L V8 sucked even more and the Vulcan 2.8L v6 was being retired. The two surprizing things was the SVO, and the inline 6's. the first Saleens's started to appear in 84. A grand whopping 5 of them. So in 85, the choices was a GT with a ton of smog equipment, Extremely rare Saleen's if you even knew they existed. And the surpizingly swift SVO's that outhandled and out braked the GT's.

You wanna build a turbo 2.3L, then I suggest you take a closer look at the 4 cyclinders from Ford of Europe. They are much more advanced over there, and the parts will fit on the 2.3l's over here. (May not be smog legal thou).

If I had the garage and the time, and found a SVO mustang, I guantee you I would be building one up. I wouldn't even consider dropping a V8 into it.
