Question fuel sensor porblem?

it is really weird....i filled the tank up last night and the fuel meter wont even touch where its supposed to be at the top.....it reads 3 1/2 of the meter and so i didnt care.....but i was bored a decided to floor it and then about 2o secs later i noticed the fuel is now at 2 1/2 ....i was like??
...i took it to nissan and they said it might be the fuel pump.....but i dont think so, cuz the car wont even start if the pump's been out so long...
....and they estimated that it'll be about $500 canadian to fix it....what`s up with my car??.....anda....do u guys ever notice after a sudden burst of accleration of about 15 secs, the fuel goes down 2milliters?.......my max'a always been like this since we bought it.....
