Is 210 too hot?

My 99 GT will run right at the 210 range especially when stopped at red lights. It will come back down but not much. Is that too hot?
FWIW I have had the system flushed and I am using dex cool.

210 is hotter than most cars run but it is not too hot. You may want to check the cooling fans to make sure they are working. Also, a cooler degree thermostat, say 180 degree may reduce the temperature somewhat. Finally, there are some radiator additives on the market today that when added tot he coolant will decrease the operating temp. by as much as 50 degrees. They increase the thermal efficiency of the coolant. I hope this helps answer your question.

Digging through either the owner's manual or a service guide at one point I found a section regarding engine temp/coolant system info and it stated that the 3.1L and 3.8L (unmodded) ideally combust at 180-185 degrees, so that should be where your temperature rests for the most part. The fans do not kick in until the temp hits 210 - which is why when it hits that mark you should notice the temp go down, but you can find modifications that will change that so they kick in earlier. If you do a lot of stop-and-go or drive in warmer climates it wouldn't hurt to go for cooler degree thermostat.

210 is very normal for stop and go driving......if your hitting 210 on the highway then you may have a problem

Thanks for the info. It is true that during stop and go it will go to 210 but on the interstate it stays considerably cooler. I am running a 160 tstat. What mods could I do to make the fans come on at 195?

Make sure you check your coolant regularly. The DexCool crap is known to sludge-up and can clog radiators and heater cores.

WaterWetter is another great additive.......I used it in my Porsche and it works as advertised. http://www.redlineoil.com/products_coolant.asp

I had the same problem recently. My suggestion would be to check your main fan relay fuse. That worked for me, thank god. You may also want to check your Temperature Sending Unit for the fans. Good Luck

Hey I got a 95 with a 3.1L What mods can you do to get the fans on sooner!!!!! runs 210 in town and 200 @ 80mph on interstate fans dont turn on untill 228 and shut off at 212 STUPID.

First, who are you calling stupid?
Second, in Florida, all my GP's run around 180 to 190. That's in the city. On the highway, runs around 170.

Sorry. Repromgramed PCM turns fan on at 180. And will let it run after car is shut off. If car's heat is past that mark. Try getting a 180 stat. See if that helps.

In relation to the original question about the temp being hot when stopped, then going down when moving, it could possibly be that your thermostat, which is located on the motor at the end of the coolant tube, is sticking. If anyone has ever put leak stopper in your coolant, that could be the culprite. You may want to take it out and check it, and maybe get a new thermo. Try a 180, which is best for the engine. It will give peak fuel mileage at that temp. Good Luck.

I have a DHP and I love it my car never gets above 180... I also have the 180 Thermostat.
