Unhappy Stalling E350 And Need To Leave On Trip!

I am very new on this forum and would appreciate any help. My band has a 1998 econoline 350 with the 5.4L V8. The van will start fine, but unless gas is continually given, it stalls out. This problem was intermitant over the last week but now the van will not stay running at all. I replaced the fuel filter, but it didnt help. If anyone has encountered this problem or has any ideas...or any questions to help narrow the problem down, I would be extremely thankful. We are supposed to leave on tour this weekend...but we need a van!!

Replace the "IAC" (Idle Air Control) and it will be cured. Pretty easy after you get the air filter housing out of the way. Make sure to reattach the inlet air temp sensor in the ducting (if you unplug it).

Thank you so much for your help. I will try that out...but could you possibly tell me where it's at and/or somewhere online i could see; and also what its purpose is. Thanks...
it costs about $60...not too bad, but i would like to understand a little more before i spend the cash.

Re: Stalling E350 And Need To Leave On Trip!

The Idle Air Control is the device that controls the engine's idle speed based on computer commands. When they fail, they fail closed, so the engine cannot get enough air to start, and when started it won't idle correctly.

It is bolted onto the end of the intake where the big black rubber tubing fits (called the Throttle Body) with two small bolts. There is a three wire connector on it too. Once you remove the air filter and black inlet tube you'll be able to see it on the driver's side top of the engine. It helps to have the new one so you KNOW what you are looking for.

it actually worked out great. was very easy to install. have since sold the van. put 130,000 on it though...not bad. not many problems either, except for the aic of course, and some brake probs.
