'99 Dodge Intrepid - Speed Senor(s)

I had a problem with the transmission not shifting past the first gear and the speedodometer not working at all. I looked up the problem on the Internet and most people recommended that I replace the output speed sensor.

When I called a auto parts store for a speed senor, they asked me whether I wanted an input or output speed sensor. I only replaced the output speed sensor, and my car seems to be working fine now, even though the "Check Engine" light is still on. I'm just wondering whether I should have replaced the input speed senor too, and if there's anything else I need to do or have someone do when I take the car to an auto repair shop so they can clear the "Check Engine" light.

Thanks.

There are a couple of ways to clear your check engine light w/o going to a shop. Disconnect your battery for like a minute and then reconnect it. If the light is still there afterwards when you start it up, then you have another problem. The next question I want to ask is did the light come on before or after you replaced the sensor?

Thanks for the info; I will try what you recommended.

The light came on before I replaced the sensor, when the speed odometer was not working and the transmission was not shifting past the first gear.

Do you know anything about the input speed sensor? Should I have replaced it too. I used a technical manual that I bought from a parts store and it doesn't mention anything about an input speed sensor.

Generally, you don't need to replace the input speed sensor unless the trouble code from the check engine light tells you to do so. If the input speed sensor went bad, then you would run into a situation where the transmission would not shift. If everything is working smoothly, then your input speed sensor is functioning properly.

Re: '99 Dodge Intrepid - Speed Senor(s)

i feel for you man,i had a 99 and every 600 the check engine light would come on, took it to the dealer several times, they said nothing was wrong
i owned the car for 7 month and was out so much money and had so much trouble out of this canadian
car that i took it to the junk yard gave it to them and had a junk tiltle put on the thing because it was
unsafe to be resold.i was cleaner out my garage the other day and found the owners manual for the car,in small print it read build in canada, the in even smaller print it said'' this car is not to be sold or registered in canada i just couldn't help but to laugh they will build them but they don't want them
on their roads,i ask around and come to find out the only way you can buy an intrepid in canada
is with the chrysler name on it. hum.

Re: '99 Dodge Intrepid - Speed Senor(s)

Two days after I replaced the speed sensor, the "Check Engine" light finally turned off by itself.

I finally started using synthetic oil (after flushing the engine), like so many people recommend for the 2.7L engine. Hopefully with this, I can get more miles out of my car.
