Another speedometer problem

speedometer works but not correctly.. it will wobble back and forth. say im going 60mph the speedometer will read everything from 50 - 75. had a friend say it was probably the sensor but he said he does not know jeeps and does not know where it is located. any one that can help in letting me know the location and what to look for? or anyone that might think its another problem. thx

Re: Another speedometer problem

what year? if it has a cable speedo it could be the cable binding, if it is electric it could be a bad sensor. it could also be a bad speedo drive gear(my t-case just ate mine). it is located on the rear half of the t-case near the top on the output housing. it has one 1/2 nut, you can take it out and check the gear when it goes back in just make sure that the o-ring is not torn and make sure that it is seated properly, and clocked in the right position.

Re: Another speedometer problem

If the gear is ok, try lubeing the cable. easiest to do from the top so disconnect from the dash unit and pull it out where you can get the speedo lube into it.

Could also be the cable slipping in the gear or in the speedo unit in the dash but less likely.
