How do I get the last error code from my 91 passat GLS.
The problem I am getting is once the car warms up, the engine lights flashes at low RPMs, if I get the engine rev, up to 3000 it goes away, so far I have been keeping it around 3000 for driving. If the lights flashes, all I have to do is REv it pass 3000 and then it stops until I start to drive again and it is below 3000 RPMS. I recently did a head job, as a faulty fan sensor blew the head gasket. I replaced the head gasket and all was fine, but know this new problem is around. TIA :-) Shawn |

Re: Trouble Codes 91 passat
I'm not entirely sure, do you have the 2 or 3 two-pin connectors under the shifter boot?

Sorry for replying so late, I was out of town the last few days, so i couldn't check the connectors in the car.
I checked and it has 2 - 2 pin conectors (a white and black one). So what does this mean??? :-) Thanks! |

Re: Trouble Codes 91 passat
Position the connectors so that on the black connector the chamfered edges are at the top & it looks like the letter A, the white one so the chamfered edges are at the right & it looks like the letter D. Get a paper clip to connect between the lower pin on each connector. Turn the ignition on first, then insert the jumper wire for a few (2-5) seconds, then remove. The engine light should begin flashing a series of four digit codes seperated by longer pauses. One flash, pause two flashes, pause, one flash, pause three flashes, long pause would be 1213. Code 4444 would be end of codes. Post which ones you get.

Re: Trouble Codes 91 passat
I mistook what you meant by engine light flashes. '91 A2 VW's could have the check engine light, but the Passat doesn't. Now I see that you mean the oil, temp or battery light flash. This doesn't signify an engine error code. Which light specifically is flashing?

When driving the OIL light flashes and beeps.
I look at the first post and i did say engine light, my opppssss. I meant the oil light flashes on and off with an annoying beep. If i rev over 2800RPM it goes away. If driving below 2800 in 5th gear, or 4thor 3rd or 2nd or 1st it beeps after the car has warmed up. If the engine is cold the beeps don't start until the engine is hot and the RPM is below 2800. Thanks for all your help. |

Re: Trouble Codes 91 passat
Your car uses a fairly complex dynamic oil pressure warning system. It has two sensors, one on the end of the cylinder head & another on the oil cooler housing at the filter. It also has a control module in the instrument cluster. Diagnosing can be a pain. You can start by either having the oil pressure checked with a gauge or just try replacing the sensors as they're fairly cheap. Make sure to keep them seperate as they look alike but are different, one makes connection, the other breaks connection. I've seen several cars with a basic light wired to the head sensor, bypassing the system.

Thanks, I will try replacing, the two cheaper sensors.
If it is the main one in the dash, i just might go to my local autmotive shop and order a pressure gaguge from them, it would probably be cheaper.. thanks BOSCHMANN for all the help. |

Re: Trouble Codes 91 passat
By gauge I meant a mechanical test gauge you would screw into the oil pressure sensor port to ensure there is not a lubrication problem with the engine.

I have had the engine tested, and there is lots of pressure, not over pressure though just right, apparently. I didn't do the test.
I am assuming it is a sensor. I just noticed that when i cycle through the computer options for mileage, fuel eco., oil temp, the oil temp doesn't show, unless the engine is off. |

Re: Trouble Codes 91 passat
That's odd, but I don't think it would be related to the pressure light coming on. I would have to refer you back to my fourth post. The system can be very erratic. Try new sensors, if that doesn't work install a basic light in the dash with the cylinder head sensor hooked directly to it.

I am ordering a new sensor for the front, the local parts shop is also a mechanic shop, he came out and checked the sensor on the oil filter housing. It is appears to be the one causing the problem.
So i am going to try that. Thanks for all yur help. |
