Re: 2001 malibu antitheft problem

You are trying to get the wiring connector off the theft portion of the ignition switch? The thing with 3 small wires?

You have to remove the ignition lock cylinder first and then you can unsnap the connector from the ignition switch.

In order to remove the ignition lock cylinder put the key into the run position and then depress a silver button on the side of the ignition switch and pull on the key to remove. It is at 4 o'clock position. Not sure how easy to reach so you might have to play around with what tool to use.

Hope that helps

Re: 2001 malibu antitheft problem

Well I am not sure exactly what you are trying to do but the antitheft portion of the "ignition" is all built into the ignition lock cylinder which you would pull out as I described. The rest of the ignition switch doesn't have to come out. Just be careful if you try to disassembly the ignition lock cylinder (which I don't know if you would need to) because it has a spring and other little pieces that could get lost.

Re: 2001 malibu antitheft problem

Oh,

Well then I don't think antitheft system but something else. You have so many different complaints it is hard to figure out where to start.

But if you do feel looseness in the ignition lock cylinder and switch I guess that is a good place to start so I guess my info on how to remove the ignition lock cylinder was worth it since you need to do that if you want to try to replace the ignition switch. Looks like an ignition switch is somewhat pricey. Probably $60-$90. Hope you can do better somewhere

i had the same problem with my 02, took it to the shop and they found some loose wire, forgot which it was, but the car thinks it's being stolen so it won't start
