Welp
This is a hard way to do it but.........if you'll take off the distributor cap only, and turn the engine over by hand until the timing mark on the harmonic balancer is on the 0 degree mark, your #1 cylinder should be at top dead center. (you can "bump" the engine over as well by hitting the ignition a hair at a time if you don't want to do it by hand or you don't have access to a remote starter) *TAKE NOTE WHICH DIRECTION THE ROTOR BUG IS TURNING WHEN YOU ARE TURNING THE ENGINE OVER BY HAND* This'll tell you which direction to run the rest of the wires in firing order once you get #1 to TDC. Once you've got that done, look at the rotor bug and it should be pointing towards the position where obviously the # 1 wire should be. Put the cap back on and run the wires from there in the firing order clockwise or counter clockwise the rest of the way around the distributor cap to the corresponding plug in the firing order. This shouldn't mess up your timing at all, so assuming it's fine now, you should be good to go once this is done.

Re: plug wire problem
Wow, just a comment I guess, but I never knew that, I thought the distribtor cap goes only one way and thats it. I know mine does. I just bought a new one Last week. Replaced Wires and Cap.
