Exhaust cutout

hey guys, i was wondering..... if you had a hole in your dp or whatever, and some sort of electronic actuator or cable-operated cover on the dp so you could run completely restriction-free for racing or through the cat/muffler for street usage..... would that be legal? i mean would it pass inspection since you "only run it at the track" like that...?
thanks

Re: Exhaust cutout

they make electric and manual cutouts. whether it passes inspection or not depends on your mechanic.

Re: Exhaust cutout

No, I don't think it will pass emissions. Mostly because you shouldn't be able to mess with your emissions on a street car, and they usually leak. If I were you, I would get a second downpipe with the cutout on it to swap in after emissions, or enjoy a full exhaust like most people.

Re: Exhaust cutout

in pa it passes if it has a cat and doesnt leak. the legality of a cutout would depend on the mechanic checking it. do you know whats required in ny?

Re: Exhaust cutout

yeah, i think we talked about that about 4 months ago, there are a couple of companys that have electric exhaust cutouts in 2.5 or 3.0in that weld onto your downpipe before your cat for $180 or so, i dont reamber for sure. on one of the websites there was a video if a wrx on a lift using the exhaust cutout. sounded awsome and dyno'ed +20hp with the mod.

Re: Exhaust cutout

I'm fairly certain that in Mass if the cutout can be operated from INSIDE the car, its illegal. They know you're going to use it But if its manually operated, i.e. you have to crawl under the car and remove the 3 wing nuts and plate, its ok. Mass is a bunch of dicks though, they're probably all illegal now. In RI I have heard that ANY cutout is illegal.

You would have to check your local laws. It might be easier to try one of the methods mentioned above for making it removable for inspection.

Re: Exhaust cutout

for California, the rule of thumb for modding your car legally is, in a nutshell: ....EVERYTHING IS ILLEGAL. lol.
