? from a novice
what exactly is a stall converter, what does it do and am i correct that it installs between the engine and trans, also can stall converters be purchased for most engines?

I'm more of a manual trans guy, but I'll give this a shot. a stall converter is verry similar to a regular torque converter. yes, it goes between the engine and an automatic transmission. the diffirence is that a stall converter needs higher engine speed to "engage" the trans. someone can probably explain this better than I can, but here's how I understand it..... lets say that the stock converter, once the trans is put in gear, starts to move the car at around 1800 RPM. with a stall converter, you'll need higher RPM before the car will move. I'm kinda new to automatics, so I'm sure someone else can explain this better than I have.

Yes it goes inbetween the engine and trans and yes you can get them for just about any transmission. Lets say you powerbrake your car. You hold the brakes and press the gas. With a stock stall converter your car will rev up around 1600-1800 RPMS before your tires start spinning. WIth a higher stall converter, say around a 2500, you will be able to press the gas and get the RPMS up to around 2500 before the back tires start spinning. This just lets you have higher RPMS out the hole and provided you have traction makes your car get off the line faster.
