Unhappy No Heat...

Hey All,

I have a problem with the heating/cooling system in my '93 Cherokee Sport.

Last winter, the heater seemed to give out (right after the first storm, I might add). Sometimes it works, takes at least 10-15 minutes to kick in when it does - if it kicks in at all. Not even cold air blows at you from the vent on high. Pretty much the same has happened with the air conditioner this summer. And, whether it works or not, there's this "clunk and sigh" noise that comes when you shut it off.

As much as I wish I could work on it myself, I have no experience. Still, it'd be great to know what to look for *before* I let a mechanic get a hold of it. My last service trip cost me a bit more than I had to spare at the time.

Any help offered would be appreciated.

TIA

Re: No Heat...

Are you saying that no air blows from the vents??
Or, if the air blows normally, its just not hot?

This is important because they are actually 2 completely different systems at work here; one is electrical and the other is related to engine coolant and operating temperature.

Re: No Heat...

There are diverter doors that direct airflow to the various vents depending on the selector. They are vacuum operated. The clunk and sigh may be the sound of the doors closing and the vacuum venting.

You didn't say specifically if the blower works. If it does, it may be that the vacuum line split, came off or somehow is leaking and not moving the doors properly.
