b18b/gsr tranny probs....

whats up, just threw in a JDM b18b with a gsr tranny in my 93 civic lx, runs fine so far but i am having some problems with the tranny. first time i drove the car it was fine. i let it sit for an hour or so and then i started having problems with the 5th gear, after 5 seconds or so, the shifter just slides back into neutral, all on its own. then it started making a high pitched whine in 3rd gear, then it started in 2nd gear and sometimes i hear it in 4th. 1st and 5th don't make any noises. i haven't checked the transmission fluid, i am flat broke and can't afford it until next week. anybody have any ideas on what it might be, other than the tranny fluid?

btw, thanks eckoman pdx, i took my car to ground zero and they helped me with the wiring harness, apparently you have to splice in the old civic harness where the JDM harness is wrong or whatever. i am missing a motor mount but the car pulls pretty well, doesn't feel like the engine struggles to pull the car.

Check your shift linkage to see if its on alright. If its making whining noise...could be a bad throw out bearing.

already checked the shift linkage, the stabilizer (the one with the round rubber part) was actually not on all the way and i fixed that but the problem persists. if the throwout bearing was bad wouldn't i hear the noise in all gears, including reverse and neutral? i only hear the noise during 2nd, 3rd and a little during 4th. the pitch of the noise goes up as i switch from 2nd to 3rd and to 4th. 5th gear also pops out into neutral after 5 seconds or so, it just slowly starts to move back and then it is in neutral. i am at a total loss.....

take your tranny to a tranny expert and have them look at it and see what they tell you.

i would highly suspect the throwout bearing, due to the fact that if your slave cylinder has malfunctioned in any way then this could force the throwout bearing onto the fingers of the clutch in more of an amount that it should be. I believe but am not sure if hondas have constant contact throwout bearings, regardless, if the bearing is in contact with the fingers with too much pressure all of the time then this might be why it pops out in fifth. It should gently rest on the fingers but if not and it is contantly trying to force itself on the pressure plate then the fingers push back and pop it out of gear. You said that the noise got louder the faster you got, this seems to me that the bearing has too much load on it all of the time and the load on it is tearing it up.

don't know if anyone cares, but i got some tranny fluid in it and magically the problem went away. its funny what you can accomplish when you actually have fluid in the tranny. i don't have internet access so it took me a while to post this.
