94 GL Problem

A week after I bought my Jetta III GL, I had it parked out on the street. I went out one morning to go grab something to eat, and the car wouldn't start. I popped the hood and looked around while my friend turned the key. It didn't really help because I don't know much about cars, which is why I'm asking for opinions. When we turned the key, the dome light was flickering as if it were struggling to draw power. The radio worked as well.

I got a friend of mine to come jump my car, then drove it over to Advance Auto Parts. I had the guy test my battery and he said it was dead. So I buy a new one. I go to put it in, and get one of the plugs on. I try to put the other one on, but the alarm goes off. So I stick my key in the ignition and try it again, but the alarm won't stop going off. I talked to my sister's boyfriend and he said it might be an electrical problem. He drives a tow truck so I got him to tow the car back to his house, where it's sitting in his yard right now. My sister was telling me that it could either be the alternator or the cellinoid (sp?). Can anyone tell me what these things do, which one it may be, and how much money it will cost to replace them?

If you need any more info, just let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the help.

Re: 94 GL Problem

Advance can be helpful, but they're in the business of selling parts. To get the alarm to stop just turn the key in the door lock to unlock position. You'll need to bring it back to Advance or somewhere to have the charging system checked.
