Question Wont start after running out of gas!

Well my gas gauge is on the fritz and I ran out of gas today in my 1984 El Camino. So I got my buddy to pull me to the parking lot. I put gas in it and a little in the carb. I got it cranked but everytime I let off the gas the engine shuts off. Anyone got any ideas??? Thanks for any feedback

Re: Wont start after running out of gas!

some cars have a special procedure after a car is run dry, i don't know what cars call for that, call a chevy dealership and ask. or i imagine the fuel lines may have air in them, crank it some more to push it thru (kinda like bleeding brakes) that is a complete guess though

Re: Wont start after running out of gas!

your car has a mechanical fuel pump. It takes a bit of time for the fuel pump to suck gas from the gas tank to the engine. The engine must run or crank for 30 sec to a minute before the pump can fill up the carb float bowl.
Ususally I can carefully fill the carb float bowl by pouring about an oz or 2 of gas directly into the float bowl through the bowl vent tube only. This provides enough gas for the car to run on until the pump can suck the gas through.

Well got it fixed, turns out that I didnt run out of gas. There was a short in my tac which caused my distributor to stop working, and I also put on a new starter because my old one was having a hard time turning the engine over. Thanks for advice and sorry for my misdiagnosis.

You are most welcome.
I have had a tach wire short out on me in the past. It makes for a very difficult diagnosis!!
