Lightbulb 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

I have a 1997 chevy cavalier with a 2.2L 5 speed stick. I have bolt ons like headrers and muffler and other small stuff but the motor still feels weak. I would like to swap the 2.2L for a 2.4L with a 5 speed as well. I would like to know if I should do this or if I should just rebuild my current motor with internals: like cams and such. At what price would a 2.4L motor and trans go for? If I get the 2.4 cheap I will rebuild it as well and add cams headers and other goodies to reach a 200 hp( is my goal). This is going to be my daily driver but I would like to get up and go on the street and minor track. What would be cheaper and which could I have the most power and fun with? How hard is it to swap and what would I need for the swap if I do one? I will be doing this myself. Thank you..

Re: 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

ok dkrool before you give advice lets learn to spell, this isnt aol and no one is gonna take you seriously if you spell like your 13.

The 2.2L engine is crap, head gasket leaks, low power, and little no gains with mods. The 2.4L is a very good engine, but not worthy of a swap, nor is a 5 speed. If you want a faster car, but a faster stock car. An engine swap will be alot of work and wiring. The trans will be even more work. Its not worth it to build the 2.2L because its just to weak to start with. Also that drkool guy has no clue what hes talking about, GM doesnt make a 2.2 Turbo crate that will work in your car, i dont even think GM uses turbos, they supercharger all their cars. They do however make a supercharger kit for the 2.4L 2000+ models. This will make 190-200HP at the crank. But only works on 2000+ models.

IF i were you, id sell the current cavy and buy a 2.4, throw the GM supercharger on it and you have a very reliable 14 second car. Also the GM supercharger will let you keep your current warranty. My car is almost completely stock, yet with the GM charger i went from a 16.1 1/4 mile to a 14.7 and my car is an auto.

Re: 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

What is a 97 z24 stock 5 speed quarter mile time? What kind of mods would I need to make to install a 2.4 L motor exactly? What is it that needs to be changed? I have been looking for another 97 in a Z24. So I might just take your advice and sell my car and buy another but with the Z24 already installed. Thanks alot.

Re: 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

Z24 5 speed with a good driver can easily do a 15.7 1/4 mile stock. but if you wanna use the Gm supercharger you should get a 2000+ model, otherwise its gonna be a little more work to get it to work.

why not just put all that money into a real car? why buy a cav and waste money on it when you could just put all the money on a loan and buy a camaro circa 2001....2002..

Re: 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

why dont you take your noobie ass to a different forum. Maybe i like the fact of having a sleeper car. Maybe i enjoy the look on someones face when they see my "non real car" beat the crap outa their "real car". Maybe i dont want to own a camaro cause every other redneck hick owns one. You have one post on here and you think you can talk trash about other peoples cars? You drive a Sunfire anways, the exact same car. . .douche bag go somewhere else.

Re: 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

yeah well dont come in here talking down our cars. Whats so special about your camaro, come to america every other redneck hick in a trailer park has one. They arent anything special. Atleast tell me its a V8 otherwise, id say the sunfire is a better car.

Re: 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

I'm not taking sides here (since I do think these cars are worth modding), but around here, there's way more J-bodies than F-bodies.

Re: 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

im not saying there are more fbodys here than jbodys, but its not an uncommon car. You can buy a base model Fbody 2000+ model with low milage starting at 10,000.

Re: 2.2L swap for a 2.4L

Thanks alot for the input guys. I have been looking for a 97+ cavalier z24 with a 5 speed and sun roof. Not going that bad, but that stupid a$$ taking about my cavalier I also have a iroc z28 camaro and let me tell you, That piece really sucks!!! it always has a problem while my cavalier has not. I would like a fast reliable car over a stupid name. I want to show everone else what an american four banger could do like beat the honda si in quarter mile stock.
