lost of questions

I have a 86 Chevy Caprice waggon. It had a Olds 307. now it has a new olds 350 with a eldebrock 600cfm carb. I am getting 9.6 MPG towing a 1200Lb trailer ( little wind restance). It is also runing at 220+. In town the temp is OK. Not towing I am getting 15 MPG and the temp is fine. I drive 65-70 MPH. When towing it takes up to 40 miles before it hits 220 and won't go down. I use the heater and that will bring it down about 5* I have spent lots of money on this car to prepare it for a tow vehicle. It has a re-man trans (200R-4) with trany cooler and a lock up . Any ideas on why I am running so hot or the gas milage is so low? I also put dual exhuast with 40 series flowmasters on it, no headers. When the engine was swaped it had a new H2O pump, Oil pump and 3 core raditor instaled.

What rear end do you have in the car? And does the fan work alright?

Re: lost of questions

The fan is working fine. I believe the gears are 263. I'm putting in a tach tomorrow and driving it with the machine and without as well.

P.S. If anyone wants to see what I'm towing, it's at www.firstcallflagging.com

P.S.S. Thanks for the info so far! I appreciate it!

Re: lost of questions

You should have no problems towing that. Now, a tandem-axle 30-ft trailer, then yes I'd be concerned.

Instead of a tach, I'd install a temperature gauge.

Re: lost of questions

I installed a tach today. Without towing, 70mph, at 1800 rpm (in overdrive). 80mph at 2200 rpm. 55mph with the air conditioning on was 1700 rpm not towing, temp was 220. Coasting down a hill temperature would not drop. Driving slower rpm, temperature dropped 30 degrees.

Re: lost of questions

You're tach readings are fine.

You may want to do some comprehensive cooling system maintenance:

Flush the system

Either send the radiator out for cleaning/repair or replace it with a 3-row unut

Replace the thermostat with a 180-degree unit (stock is 195).

Check hoses/belts

Replace the radiator cap

Clean the overflow reservoir out

Install an external transmission cooler to help reduce thermal load (change trans fluid if there's any evidence of overheated fluid)

Feel free to send an e-mail if you need additional info/assist

Good luck.
