Re: bi-pass do they work?
If the intake becomes submerged, the change in pressure (since the engine is now trying to suck up water instead of air) causes a valve to shut off the intake. Nothing that comes through the cone filter at the bottom can get to the intake manifold. The bypass valve, mounted at the top of the intake, lets air in through its own ports instead (which is hotter, because it's from inside the engine compartment, but hot air is a whole lot better than water, as you have seen).
For keeping water out of your engine, nothing is as reliable as the stock air intake, plain and simple. But the bypass valve is your best bet for a CAI. A short ram intake is probably the safest of all, but it's not as effective; you sacrifice cold air for the safety of your engine. Which, in your case, actually might not be a bad idea.
