1996 4X4 trans rebuild ????????s

A very reliable transmission shop changed the transmission oil and filter in my 168,000 miles 1996 Tahoe. I just bought the Tahoe and was told that the transmission was never worked on but the oil had been change every 30,000 miles. The shop told me that there was metal and torque converter material in the bottom of the pan. I looked at the bottom of the pan and saw metallic in the oil and brown residue in the corners of the pan. The metallic metal looked like very small fine metallic paint. They cut open the filter and showed me the metal in the middle of the filter. They wanted to rebuild the transmission and tork converter right then. I said no, just put it back together. I am trying to find out if I really need to rebuild it. I also want to know if the oil pasts through the transmission and to the transfer case and now I should have that rebuild as well. Any help or information would be helpful. Thanks Dave

Get a manual from the bookstore of this site to further educate yourself about your 4L60-E Auto transmission. It will enable you to further understand what the tranny shop will do. www.atsg.biz

Does the trans shift right ?? Any slippage ?? What made you take it in ?? You will find some metalic particles in the pan and filter on any trans however if it is accessive it could mean trouble. If the previous owner didn't change the fluid (Even though he says he did ) there could be more particles than usual. If it were mine and was shifting fine with no slippage I would drive it because most of the time it will not strand you without giving you any warning. On the flipside some people consider the mileage high enough to warrant a rebuild. If you tow or even if you don't and have the money to put into it it can't hurt to rebuild it if it is a good shop. I needed some work done to the vavle body on mine at 176,000 miles that was around $400 so I just had it rebuilt with several upgrades for $1,800. It is a tough call. How many miles do you drive it a day ?? Is it your family vehicle or just a personal vehicle ??

Re: 1996 4X4 trans rebuild ????????s

The Trans shift smooth. I have a deep rumble between 63 to 73 MPH and thats why I took it into the shop. It does not seem to slip but I don't put my foot into it and keep it on the freeway. It my third car and I use it to drive to work (LA freeways). Does any know if the tranfer case oil mixes with the tranmisson oil? Thanks Dave

I drained the transfer case on my 89 and it was about 1 1/2 quarts overfilled and my transmission was down 1 1/2 quarts. So my evidence says that they do mix but no one on this list or Bobistheoilguy list can confirm that this is the way it should be. My repair manual doesn't address this issue but people have mentioned a bad seal between the two as a possibility.

Until I learn this is a problem, I leaving it the way it is.

NO THEY DO NOT MIX!!!!!!!
The transmission rear seal is leaking.
The fluid is going from the trans past the rear seal down the main shaft and into the transfer case.
You need to remove the transfer case and replace the transmission rear seal and the transfer case front seal also the gasket that goes between the trans and transfer case.

Parts + (time x labor rate) + sales tax

This is almost entirely unrelated to the original post, so it may be best to start your own post if you want a serious answer.
