emergency exit

Hi everyone. What does the Emergency Exit lever do? It sits next to my emergency brake. Another thing, my fuel line is leaking. Someone looked at it and said if he touched it, all fuel and brake lines would break due to rust. He said that he can run another gas line under the car and cover it. He won;t remove the other line, just disconnect it. How good of an idea do you guys think it is?

Zeek,
If you have an older Camry with the electric front seat belts then I believe if you pull up on the handle, you'll be able to manually push the seat belts forward and thus "escape". A red flashing light at the handle should illuminate when you pull the lever also.

That's for the ejection seat.

Actually, it a safety release for the seat belt. If the car should flip over in some kind of accident, pulling that lever undoes the seat belt easily and fast without fumbling for the button.

Is it OK for me to make sure that it works? Or should a dealer make sure that it works?

Camry release lever

That emergency release lever is only for the shoulder belt. The lap belt is released the usual way. No need to have it tested, if you pull up on the lever, a warning light and beeping will go off, indicating it's in the release mode. This applies to 87-91 models.

Yes, you can test it. Just pull the lever when you have your seatbelt on and it releases the seatbelt. Push the lever back into it's original position and it's back to normal.

Re: emergency exit

As for the fuel line that is a perfectly acceptable repair that you described.
