electrical fuel problems

i have a 1991 RS 2.7 i think V6 injected......this is a intermentant problem..no rime or reason. when i turn on the key and i hear the fuel pump humm i know it is going to start. when i don't hear it, it wont start. sometimes i am just driving and the engine will stop running. i will pull over and shut everything off and it will restart sometimes right off the bat after about 15 seconds. other times it will take 15-20 min then it will restart. i have replaced the fuel relay but that didn't help. i know it is electrical because i have (and probably shouldn't have) taken off the air intake tube (?) and shot it with starter fluid....it runs till the fluid is gone....could this be the ecm?....i don't want to take it to a shop if it is an easy fix....if not then i will have to bite the bullet and pay the bucks.....what do you think?

Connect a wire to the fuel pump input near the tank. Connect a test light to the wire so you can see it when you drive. If the light goes off when driving the pump is GOOD therefore you then trace the intermittent back. If the light stays lit R&R the pump.

Re: electrical fuel problems

check your oil pressure switch. If it's faulty it will cause your fuel pump to shut off. check the connection on the relay and the pump, check for frayed and exposed wires.

Re: electrical fuel problems

my first guess would be the fuel pump its self, but what it sounds like is an intermittant electrical connection, such as the oil pressure switch as 92RS said, or it could be a bad fuel pump relay, or anything like that, check the ciruit for any signs of damage, corrosion, or burning.

Re: electrical fuel problems

Thanks for all the input. I took it to the dealer and they think it is the ECM. they wanted $350.00 to do the job. I have connections and a new ECM is $75.00. I hope that will fix it. will keep you posted!

Re: electrical fuel problems

so far the ECM didnot fix the problem. we are now in the process of checking the wiring from the relay to the fuel pump....it sat for 5 days and did not start. we raised the rearend to check the wiring and it then would start.....loose wires/connections?...hmmmmmm!
