Chrome buildup on rims, causing tires to deflate

I have had my 3000Gt for about 2 months, and in that time both of my left tires have deflated. I took in my flat front left to NTB and the guy said that there was build up of chrome on the rim. He was able to scrape it off and put some gooey crap on it and it hasnt lost air since(3 weeks). Now my back tire is starting to do the same thing. Just wondering if any of you other guys have had a problem with this on your 3000GT's and have fixed it. By the way the rims are the 98 Chromes. Thanks Again.

Haha, I recently started losing air in my one tire, I lose about 5psi per day, I just keep a portable air compressor in the car, but I will be using fix-a-flat pretty soon.

What the heck does 'chrome build up' mean. I've never had any problems with my chromies.

i think he might mean a corrosion build up which is common on alloy wheels on the inside of the rim under the tyre.

i think its due to water that gets trapped in between the tyre and the rim and slowly builds up over a period of time.

the only real solution is to get the tyre taken off and get the tyre shop to clean the rim off. they then use a kind of rubber solution which puts a seal between the tyre and the rim, usually there are no more problems after that.

oh, also only use fix a flat or any other product like that inside a tyre in extreme emergencies as it can damage the tyre and even cause it to explode under extreme circumstances, these things are only designed to be used to get you home at low speeds and normally after the tyre is fixed the product should be cleaned out thoroughly from the tyre.

Re: Chrome buildup on rims, causing tires to deflate

Oh, good to know. My honda and my mom's subaru ran on fix-a-flat for months, possibly years and never had a problem. I knew the stuff had to be cleaned out, but this whole filling the tire up every day or 2 is really annoying. I can't seem to find a leak, so I'm guessing it is the seal between the tire and rim...any suggestions?
