Starter problem

A few months ago I was having problems starting my 93 explorer. When the key is turned the lights go on and all I can hear is what I think is the fuel pump. However, there is not a peep coming fomr the starter. After a few atempts it would turn right over. Then it stopped turning over alltogether. I attempted knocking on the starter and still nothing. THen bypassing the solenoid, I could get the starter to spin so I associated teh problem with the solenoid. After replacing the solenoid it worked fine for a few weeks so I thoguh the problem was solved. But the other day it refused to start again. THe same symptoms and I'm not sure what could be the cause since I don't think the lifetime of a starter is only 3 weeks. Any suggestions as to the problem would be greatly appreciated.

Have had the same problem twice. The first time I replaced the selonoid as you did. Found this did not fix the problem(after a couple of weeks). Replaced the whole starter problem went away for two years. Did the same thing recently. Replaced the whole starter everything is fine again.

The old chevy's had this problem. Banging on the starter or replacing the selonoid worked. I'm assuming it is a rotational problem the brushes getting between two fields or wearing funny. When it happens again take out the two bolts that hold the starter in turn it over slightly and reinstall. My guess it will work for another two weeks or so. The Napa guy told me they get a lot of replacements for these small high torque Ford starters but maybe he just wanted me to feel better.

thanx for the help, I was just really hoping that I didn't have to buy a new starter since I'm on a student's budget but I guess I might not have a choice.

My 96 is having a problem with starting, but it's not in the starting circuit at all. It's actually in the sensor mounted on the side of the tranny where the cable and linkage go though. The electrical plug on the back of the sensor is picking up mixed signals and causing a no-start situation, also, if I keep the plug securely pushed in, it will cause my starter to engage when I put it into park. Sounds wierd, I know, but if i unplug the unit, turn on the key, and bump the solenoid, it fires right up and runs as if nothin's wrong. Hope this helps...
