Unhappy Newbie with Problems

95 Geo Metro LSI 1.3 L 4 Cyl. Automatic Transmission

Problems:

1. No inside Lights
2. Rear Lights stay on unless you remove 20 AMP fuse (even when car is off)
3. SLOW acceleration unless you manually shift thought the gears.
4. Continually breaking Alternator/Fan belts (5 replaced now)

I have replaced all of the fuses and they seem to be fine, so no clue as to why the inside lights do not work. I have also had the alternator checked and (Advance) says it checks out fine. I’m not sure what is up with the transmission and no acceleration power.

I have a friend who suggested that maybe the tension pulley was bad, but how do I check this? I need to try to figure out how to repair all of these problems as cheaply as possible and as quickly…I start a new job on Monday and need my car…LOL

Any help with all of these symptoms would be wonderful.

You may email me at: [email protected]

Thanks!
Lisa

The fan/alt belt breaking repeatedly sounds like a bad pulley, like your friend suggested. If there's a bad bearing in it (not turning freely) it can place too much tension on the belt, which could damage/break the belt.

The slow acceleration might (guessing here) be related to the bad pully. If the pulley is dragging and thus requiring too much effort on the part of the engine to turn it, the power left over for acceleration might be quite a bit less.

The rear lights staying on sounds like a bad switch (broken in the always-on position). Why the removal of the ignition key won't turn these off is a mystery though (?)

No side-lights sounds like a fuse.

Perhaps there's some corrosion in the fuse box?
