I can't figure this %@#Z'n silverado out.

all right I got the damed tuck started. I put in a new sending unit new fuel pump new cap new rotor. and nothing so i checked the time. the rotor was pointing at 5 instead of 1 on the compression stroke. now I did take the distributor sensor out of the truck and had to bump the motor with the cap off so that I could get the mod out. so I thought that I might have slipped the rotor deck a little.would that knock it out of time. so I moved it to #1 and the truck fired up fine.the book says you cannot ajust the time. but now I have a service engine light on I reset the computer and the light came back on and know will not go out. what can I do for this.

the truck is a 1997 chevy k1500 Z71 4x4 5.7L 350 vortec.

Not possible with 96 and newer OBD 2 can not be read with the blinking code method a tech 2 scan tool is ONLY way.(Yea I know, I think that sucks too) I believe you have a code 1345. Have the DTC #'s read and get back too us.

I just *rented* one for free at a Checker auto parts (part of the Kragen Chain). All I had to do was leave a credit card number and fill out a form. Its handy to have around when doing a tune up - just in case.

Re: I can't figure this %@#Z'n silverado out.

the code is 1345 manufacture control 1 0f 2 , ignition system , or missfire. the truck is running like a top there is no sputter or anything. the book says it is the camshaft sensor in the dis. and we did take that out to have it tested so how can I get that light off or what do i have to do that sensor runs in sink with the crank sensor so say the little book. I really Appreciate all the help.

Ok, so it is in fact P1345. This means Crankshaft postion sensor and camshaft postion sensor corelation problem. The distributor is a tooth off in either direction. The VCM adapts to this new configuration and adjust for the new timming (meaning your engine will run fine like this ) but zero camshaft retard offset will not be obtained. To clear the light take off neg. battery cable get in truck and pump the brakes like 50 times. I don't know why this works but it does. The theory is the vcm stores a small power charge in case electrical source is disabled in an accident the air bags can still deploy with the stored power.

Re: I can't figure this %@#Z'n silverado out.

I unhooker the neg on the battery and then pumped the brake peddal like 50 times and put rehooked the battery and then started the truck, it fired up fine ran then it stumbled ( or missed) the light was out for like 1 minute the came right back on . do you think the tuck need a new cam sensor?

If it lit up again running means it failed and is still sensing a corelation problem. What I would do is physically turn engine to #1 TDC with dist. cap off and make sure the rotor is pointing at the 5 oclock postion (look in service manual or alldata to make sure about where #1 TDC is in relation to rotor/dist.) If it is right, then you need to start looking somewhere else, I would not go buy sensor's unless I was sure. Crankshaft sensor is about $110 and cam shaft is probally the same. The crankshaft sensor is more likly to go out than a camshaft sensor. So look for the dist. postion first and then read code again if it is 1345 still u need to run the dianostic steps assciated with that code. I f you want the step by step procedure I can e-mail it to you. It's about 2 pages.Learn frm my mistake don't go buy a sensor to replace a perfectly good sensor, can get real costly and irratatting.

Ok i'm going to give you my user name and password to my Alldata suscription you will be able to view all TSB's and get detailed service info that you will never find in a chilton or haynes manual. I need your e-mail address I can't e-mail u from here I have go my AOL browser for e-mails. and I will give u the link to my log-on page as well.

Oh and the anwser to the above question about what happened to simple mechanical tune ups. The days of do-it-yourself auto repair are over, Unless you invest thousands of $ in scanners, speacialty tools, 3000 page service manuals in 5 volumes...etc. My 1979 chevy c20 has over 500,000 miles on it and never breaks down , I don't even check the oil, or any other fluid in it.
