1991 Dodge Spirit starting problem!
I have a 1991 dodge spirit v6 3.0. I washed the engine compartment Saturday while the engine was running. I put a plastic bag over the dis cap. I stopped a couple places after that and it ran and started fine. Later that night it wouldn't start. Put the car in the garage with a fan blowing on the motor with the dis cap off. I tried to start it 4 hours later and it fired up. So i let it run for a half hour. Shut it off and tried to start again, it started about five times. I figured it was fixed. Sunday morning it didnt start anymore. Checked to see if there was any water in the dis cap or wires but everything was dry. Checked all the fuses and tested for spark from the wires and the coil. No spark from either and think its not getting fuel since i cant hear the fuel pump kick on and dont smell gas after attempting to start many times. I checked the computer code. It said relay circut open shorted ASD. I dont know what that means. So i called an auto part store and was told to replace the map sensor. That didnt work. It almost started Monday for a brief second and died out after trying to start it forever then died out quickly. Everyday i try to start it for 10 minutes and it will not even atempt to start. I was hoping whatever was wet would have dried by now. I have no idea what it could be now. Did something shortout and why did it start those couple times and not start now. I was told to spray WD40 on the electrical stuff so i sprayed some and it didnt work either. Someone also said to take a hairdryer over the distributor. I didnt try that cause it looks dry and was sealed up pretty good. Checked all wires and hoses to see if i didnt blow something off. So if anyone has an idea please help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Re: 1991 Dodge Spirit starting problem!
A "relay circut open shorted ASD" code is a catch-all for the obvious - no spark. It means the timing signal is lost. There are two sensors that tell the computer the timing reference: The Crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor.
I don't know where thery are located, but I suspect they are one the front (passenger side) of the engine. Follow the wiring. One of them may be shorted out from the water. |

Thank you i'll try replacing those sensors. By the way I tried to start it today and the starter quit on me.

Re: 1991 Dodge Spirit starting problem!
Actually, the 3.0 V6 does not have a crank or cam sensor, instead it uses an LED optical distributor. Chances are there are one of two things, believe me I used to have a '92 Spirit 3.0 V6 before it was fatally wrecked by a drunk driver, the ASD (which stands for Auto Shut Down relay) has closed off the circuit because there is a fault in the optical distributor. You can either replace the distributor, which is a $90 fix, or replace the ASD relay. Either way, you more than likely have warped some of the disk spacers inside the distributor because water touched it.

Also, try the pulling any trouble codes by using the ignition key method. Turn the key on/off three times ending in the on position. Watch the CHECK ENGINE light flash and not how many times it does. If it flashes 2 times, then pauses and then flashes another 4 times, then you have a code 24. Try that and see what happens.

You might need to test your fuel pump. My 1992 Spirit had trouble starting alot of times. I had to replace it. It starts up fine now.

Re: 1991 Dodge Spirit starting problem!
Prior to it not starting, di the engine seem like it was going to cut off on you when it ran or when you revved it up, seem like it was bucking or going to die?
