Re: 2004 chevy malibu not starting and dying

Probably need a little more info. What engine is in your vehicle?

When you say "not start" is it a crank but no start or no crank at all? Does it happen when cold, hot or any time.

When the vehicle "dies" are you idling, coming to a stop, or driving at speed? Does this happen when only cold or hot?

Have you noticed any telltales in instrument cluster associated with these problems.

Sorry for all the questions (LOL)

Re: 2004 chevy malibu not starting and dying

I have a similar problem in my 04 Malibu LT. I dont remember mine actually dying yet. IT has cranked and not started before. But it often stumbles and idles rough.
Feel free to shoot me an email I'm interested in fixing this problem also.
[email protected] I have not taken mine into the Dealer yet. I'm too lazy. LOL
EDIT: to answer some of the questions above on my vehicle at least. It will do this at random hot or cold. Sometimes ill run into a store. Then when i come out, I will hit the starter and it will crank for x amount of time and then stop. No start. Then some times it will fire up on the second try. Others it will take a couple tries. Smetimes it feels like it's about to die (like a big cam, lope). Mine has never died on me after it's started. This is with the vehicle in Park also as well as when I back out the drive. It will run fine when gas is given. Nothing noted going wrong as far as the guages (that I can think of ill try to look harder) Only thing is the RPM's but that is a given.

my malibu is dying while running...1st time was stopping for stop sign 2nd time for a red light.....the not starting is when i kill it to go in somewhere then i get back in. sounds like is hanging up.. i can take my key out wait bout 10 sec then it will start..as long as my key is in though i havent been able to get it to start...it is a 4 cylinder motor..i have had it in shop now 5 times and they have only been able to duplicate prob one time. no clue as to what it is...i have asked about anti theft.....wrong key.....ignition switch...u name we have checked it or so they say...service mgr told me to go ahead with the lemon law. i am worried that my car will die on me while i am driving and my 7 year old will be with me and i will be rear ended. i almost was at the red light...i am so upset and aggravated has made me miss work and i am fed up. hope this is enough info ty for answering me so quickly.

Ill run it up there to see what they say. I have the V-6 w/auto start. Seems like it's odd we would have the same problem with two diff engines. I bet our problems are not the same. Ill try to get it there next week.

I don't have an answer for you on the no start but on the stall when idling (esp because of where you live - hot climate) I would suggest if dealer has not done this to suggest he look up #PIP3098C and see if applicable to your vehicle

If he doesn't understand what that number means then I would recommend they call Chevrolet Technical Assistance Center.

I just got back from the hospital after being laid up for 5 weeks after falling off a ladder in the aftermath of Hurricane Frances and shattering my knee. I'm way overdue to resolve several issues with my '04 Maxx (and Chevy is bugging me to death), and now it won't happen until Jan. when I can drive again.

A friend (and member of Edmund's Town Hall) e-mailed me a few weeks ago and said that the stalling/rough idle on the '04s is covered by a PCM (computer) "reflash" that cured all of his problems immediately.

You might want to read posts in Edmund's over the last month for more details.

04 Malibu dying

I have a 04 Maxx, but not experiencing the dying problem. However, I had a 98 GMC Sierra that did. It turned out to be the sensor in the steering column that detects whether the key is correct. It kept thinking the key being inserted was "bad" so it thought someone was trying to steal it. So, it either wouldn't start, or would fire up immediately to 800 rpm and then shut off. Replacing whatever it was in the steering column solved the problem.
