Unhappy 1997 Cherokee Key problems

I have a 97 Cherokee that recently developed a problem with the key.

I can go to accessory and I can go forward to some degree but the key/ignition looses its "grip" and goes slack with no tension. At this point there is no turning it over because its freely moving.

I dont know if its a pin or ???? that may have broke. If I push the key in hardand turn it over (slowly) it sometimes will catch but most time no deal.

I have to warn any responders- I am a total nON mechanical person. I can do most things and as long as I take my time I can do things (and in a limited capacity have done them right). Any reference points or suggestions are welcomed.

Years ago my junky cars from school years I had a key issue and had to pull the steering wheel and swap it out in my 79 Mustang. I hope and pray it isnt that cause I am solo on this one where I had some help on the former

Thanks again
Chuck
