Car starts, then stalls
I have a 97 Grand Prix GTP with 109,000 miles. We recently replaced the fuel pump resistor as it was speculated that it may be causing the car to start, then stall (car sounds like its choking for air or fuel) approx 2 seconds after.
Everything was fine for a week. Then when the issues came about again we hooked up a fuel pressure gauge. On key on the fuel pump primes the car to about 42-45PSI. The car will start fine, then about 2 seconds after starting the fuel pressure drops and the car begins to choke out and stall when the PSI is around 20 or less. The funny thing is that after the car stalls the fuel pump kicks back in and primes the car back up to 42-45 PSI. My dad who is a manager at a local Buick dealer was told by the techs to replace the fuel pump. With the pump replaced the same issues still exist. I was reading through the service manual on the car that when the PCM receives notification from any sensor it will tell the fuel pump to shut off. After reading through this forum I'm debating if I have issues with the CPS or possibly even a MAF, IAC, or MAP sensor? Any ideas guys...thanks... |

Re: Car starts, then stalls
Although what your indicating isn't exactly symptomatic of a CPS problem (see some of the older posts), it still could be failing. No way to really know for sure but to replace it.

Has the SES ever came on during any of these problems??If it has and then gone off,the PCM will store it and you can find out what code was set to try and help fix the problem, with out replacing lots of parts.

Re: Car starts, then stalls
I just wnted to throw my two cents in even though I am by no means an expert but my 98 GTP would start doing that in my early stages of my now current problem which is now of course my Crankshaft position sensor (CPS) stlwagon had said it could very possibly be that. It is something that you might want to seriously consider.

Just posting a follow up on what the problem was in my case...
It was not an issue with any of the sensors, etc. rather the fuel pump wiring/connectors needed attention. According to the dealer they had to replace the connectors at the fuel pump end and the underhood relay center end. They said something about the fuel pump loosing its ground after the wires started to warm up. |

I've had exactly the same problem on my 02 3.8 and have replaced MAF, IAC, MAP, O2 (front), TPS.........all to no avail. So, I'm going to try the CPS and then the fuel pump connectors and will post results of each after doing so.
Thank you contributors for the above information that has given me new hope.
