Which way does the screw turn?

Does anyone know for sure which way the crankshaft pulley center bolt loosens? It is on a 98 GTP. I was told it might be a backward bolt.

Pretty sure it's standard right hand threads. Not sure, I've never removed mine but I've removed MANY others.....never seen one that had left hand threads.

Re: Which way does the screw turn?

My first thought was that it was standard. But I started to second guess myself when I still haven't broke it loose. Please keep in mind that I am not a small guy and don't concider myself weak. I am useing a breaker bar with a two ft pipe. Thanks for the input I will be giving a go again tonight with a four ft pipe attached, Lets just hope I dont break something...........

Like I said, look in the yellow pages for rental companys most of them carry either an air or electric impact. It will remove the bolt.Just make sure to use it to put the bolt back in also, that way you wount need a specail tool to hold the flexplate plus the bolt is torqued to (111 + 76?ft. lbs.) so its on there tight.Plus GM used lock tite on the threads.

Re: Which way does the screw turn?

Come on Larry, do it like they did in the sixties. Put a breaker bar and pipe. Set it on the frame. And turn the car over. Please don't try this at home. Just messing with Larry.

Re: Which way does the screw turn?

Yes kid I know enough not to turn it over like that. You have to get under the car and have a friend turn it over while you hold on to the breaker bar!!!!HAHAHA

But really should 150 psi tank be enough power (Air) to power a impact wrench.

150 psi should be fine.I was just looking at a 425 ft lb 1/2 in air impact and it said 90psi.Then you can get all kinds on fun air tools

Most impacts operate at 90psi.......the trick is to buy a good one. There's lots of impact wrenches that work well for most applications but won't break the crankshaft bolt loose. Pay attention to the max torque rating listed on the product.

My favorite of all my air tools is my 3/8" drive air ratchet. Funny story......if you buy a paint gun, be advised, they operate at a signifanctly lower psi. I KNOW!! I hooked up my paint gun when I first got it and didn't think about the fact that my regulator was set at 120 psi.....DOH. Luckily the gun didn't rupture but the aluminum can is no longer concave on the bottom.
