Battery ?

What is the best battery to use if you have a subwoofer stereo system? My battery is very weak and worry that one morning going to work it wont start. When I use my blinker it fluctuates, and when I use my lights and rear defroster it is almost below half way.

Re: Battery ?

That's the alternator. When the car is running, you're not using electricity from the battery (only used to start up the car) you're using electricity from the alternator. As long as your voltage is around 12V you should be fine (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). But if you're worried, you can buy or get a custom built alternator or go the cheap way and get a farad cap. You'll connect the cap before the amp that supplies the subs. It stores charge from the alternator, so when you hit deep notes that use alot of power, it takes the power from the cap and not the alternator, so no voltage drop.

Re: Battery ?

Yeah, my friend was telling me something about a capacitor for your system so that it won't drain your battery as bad. Might want to look into that....

About the alternator, my dad once took 2 broken alternators and salvaged the parts to make one that works. Hehe Haven't broken since as far as I'm aware. Pretty cool eh?

Re: Battery ?

I'm thinking from around $80 to $150 for the capacitors, alot more for the alternator. I know you can add another battery just for the audio, but I only see that and the custom alternators on competition vehicles. I had a Grand AM GT with 3 RF 300watt amps and never got the cap, alternator, or extra batt., I just tried not use too many accessories at once w/the radio on. A/C and radio full blast meant a new alternator, but my voltage would be around 10V

well if you want to buy a high performance battery, Optima makes the red top, blue top and yellow top batteries with some serious new gel technology that can help sustain your system. As for the fluctuating when you turn on the blinkers....dont worry, my car does that, its perfectly normal.

you need a minimum of 13.2-14.5 volts to keep your battery charged any less and you are in trouble as the fuel pump works on regulated voltage so if you are booting it down the road with low voltage coming out of the alternator you are not getting the correct amount of fuel to feed you car and the concequences can be disasterous so watch out!!!!!!!!

a farad cap is a perfect solution but get that alternator checked out.

hope this helps

Hmm...never heard of that before. How would one go about doing that? And would a cap still be needed if the sub was hooked to the alternator?

Re: Battery ?

you don't actually need to hook it to the alternator since it will recharge the battery also.a cap is the best bet

Uh no, when the car is running, you ARE using electricity from the battery. The alternator is what constantly recharges your battery while driving so it doesn't drain.
