Give Me Opinions on Turbo Choice!

Okay guys, I'm looking ahead to a turbo upgrade at some point in the near future. Any opinions or suggestions are welcomed

Yes you can do that but I think that the 16g is more than enought if you are going to use the car every day (or a big 16 i dunno the price range they have)

Re: Give Me Opinions on Turbo Choice!

I also say evo16, not necessarily bigger. With race gas, thats more than enough turbo. With pump though, if you want 12s you'll want to go bigger. EVO16g is a great turbo, cant really go wrong unless you want big pump gas power (new tdo6h 20g is a great option, 999 new).

You wont need many lines. The water lines just get swapped and bent slightly. The drain line will work if you file/grind the bolt holes closer together. Not hard at all but it can be time consuming. The feed line you'll need, but you should always use new feed lines, and change them once every other year or so. If you buy a new turbo they typically dont warranty it unless you get a new feed line at the same time

Whichever you choose, good luck with it.

Your still gonna be using your car as a daily driver. I say 16g, but its up to you. You should be able to get into the low 13 with the 16g, plus its not that expensive compared to the EVO III. Let us know what you get.

Good Luck!

Re: Give Me Opinions on Turbo Choice!

I think it would give you room to advance beyond high twelves, and make it easier to get there in the first place. Tuning can be a bitch sometimes.

Remember, just because 14bs are in the 11s does not mean ALL 14b powered cars can achieve that.

Re: Give Me Opinions on Turbo Choice!

Leon Reitman has run the 11.6 on the 14b. Its a 1g race only car with VPC. If you go to his page (www.reitmanracing.com) he might have a shop car page or something with some info.

I dont think the evo16 is overkill at all. It takes a strong setup, great tuning, and even better driving to get one in the 11s. MAny poeple cant even get 20Gs into the 12s, so I dont like to look at it that way. I look at what the turbo is capable of for power. Then look at your weight (daily drivers will be heavy). Then figure out what time you will run.

A turbo has a given airflow capacity. How much power you make with that airflow is up to your setup and tuning ability. How fast you run with that power depends on the cars weight, traction, and driving ability.

I think with your goals you are better off with a turbo that can move your weight without maxing out. Running a turbo to the brink and tuning/driving the car to within an inch of its life is how you are most likely to end up breaking things often.

I really think you should look into then garrett t03/t04 hybrid. then you will get spool and power.

Re: Give Me Opinions on Turbo Choice!

ok, my first thoughts are that you should do everything you can prior to getting the turbo. when i got mine all i needed was the turbo [install kit], injectors, and SAFC [something to tune]. all the other shit really wasn't nessecary to go really fast.

as far as my first week of having it:

first couple days i thought the lag was a bit much and thought mabey i should have gotten a regular 16g.

then i thought ''you sound like a bitch... should have gotten a smaller turbo... don't be a pussy!''

now i drive a bit different, keep it into the higher rpm's a bit more. i'm in tune to the fact that if i hit more than ~13psi in first i'm losing the front end. also that after ~6250 rpm in 2nd it's gone too. 3rd is like a beast unleashed...

get as many supporting mods as you can before you go the full distance of the turbo. i don't know about you, but for me, having something i have to tune down so i won't blow up would be very frustrating.

once i get my pocketlogger it's on baby! tweeker tuning heaven!

Re: Give Me Opinions on Turbo Choice!

I'd suggest getting an evoIII16g or even something a little bigger. If you want a nice 12 second timeslip fairly conistently on a full weight, pump gas dsm, then you might want to consider a turbo slightly bigger. Maybe a tdo6h 20g like Kevin suggested. Or the tdo5 20g for a little better spoolup. Either of those turbos have the potential to run 12's all day long on full weight/pump gas with decent driving.

OR if you want to save some money but still want the power of a 20g, check out the t04b v-trim at www.bullseye-power.com !!!!! It's basically a bolt on garret-mitsu hybrid 50 trim... FOR ONLY $599! That's almost the same price as a new evoIII16g! It flows like 49 lbs/min, which is almost the same as a 20g which is like 48 lbs/min (I think). I myself am seriously considering this turbo, simply because of the price-to-power difference. Call up the guys at bullseyepower and talk to them about it, they'll tell you anything you want to know about the turbo! Good luck, and have fun!

Re: Give Me Opinions on Turbo Choice!

That 50 trim from Bullseye sounds excellent! Does it require an aftermarket manifold to bolt up? I think Vince is right about getting an optimized setup before doing a major turbo upgrade.

Did you notice any gains at all with the fmic on the T25? I understand that there should be minimal if any gains, when compared to larger turbos, just asking someone with direct experience . Has anyone heard anything about the efficiency or flow rate of stock Evo 8 fmics?

Re: Give Me Opinions on Turbo Choice!

ya i did. the down side was it ran out of breath a bit sooner [longer pipes to blow up]. no biggie. it was all in prep though. i would rather had done it sooner.

look up the old thread titled something like

'intercooling is the most important thing for pump gas'

great info in there...
