Decisions Decisions
Alrighty, my D16A6 smokes on high revv, and i'm looking to do a valve job on it, tune up, you know get it up to speed a bit (gas mileage is sucking right now, 20 mpg). And i saw the d16a6 engine for sale with way less miles on it for 600 bux (with shipping prolly around 800). So to buy the engine and put it in, lookin at 1000+. Should i just fix up the current engine i have? Or work with a "newer" engine?
And how much does a valve job usually cost anywhoz? Don't wanna get ripped off

Re: Decisions Decisions
DAMN! 600 bucks!? Thats way too much for a d16a6. I'd get a sohc vtec for that price. If you want to buy a head thats already worked on...check out www.gudeperformance.com
I think thats there site. Buy there whole head package. |

Re: Decisions Decisions
A lot of hondas smoke in high rpms. Remember that you will still burn a little more oil in higher rpms no matter the engine. My DOHC ZC blows a little haze of smoke but it's because of the carbon buildup in the exhaust system and my cat hollowed out + no res. But it don't bother me.

Re: Decisions Decisions
BTW, I only had a garage do my valves once and they charged me $62. I'ma say do a compression check. Maybe next time you do oil change add some of that "Reduce Smoke" or "Oil Treatment" stuff and see if that helps. If not then maybe the headgasket.

Re: Decisions Decisions
I paid $600 for my d16a6 with good miles (about 80k) and I thought it was expensive too. But since I've had it in my car for over a year and a half, I've already gotten my money out of it. I'm sure I could've figured out the wiring for sohc vtec and all that good stuff but I didn't and still don't have a garage, had limited time to work with, needed a car to drive and had to go with a good ole' boy mechanic to do the swap. I know more now than I did then and probably spent too much money at the time, but I got my car up and running again after a fire and very close to selling it. It still seems crazy that I got the car in great running shape again after all that mess. GL
