97 Gtp randomly stalls

Hey everyone, I am posting this in the forum as my cars last chance for redemption. For the last few months my car has been stalling out on me at random. Usually it will pop back onwithout having to do anything if im coasting at highway speed. If im stuck in trafic it will die and restart usually within 10 seconds. Today though its doing something different. After it died for about the 10th time it started acting up. When i hit the gas it seems to have lost some power. And the power it did have came in spurts (almost felt like i have a cylinder mis firing or somthing). Also it seems that something went wrong with my power steering or the steering assist. That could be a completely different problem as my check tire guage has been comming on and off for months and that seems to affect the power steering. I have brough this car to private garages and to the dealership. Neither could find anythign wrong. The dealership didnt even find any codes stored in the computer. If anybody has any suggestions i would LOVE to hear them. As i will have to buy a new car by the end of the week if i cant get this fixed.
Thanks

You are having the same problems as a few others on here....Its the CPS/Crank Posistion Sensor. Its going bad and thats why you are now starting to get miss-fires.It will only get worse.

Did you know that there is a recall out on the Rack for 97s????

Thanks for the info. Isnt it great to have to have smart people on the internet vs being stuck with the dealership and their incompetence.
Any idea what thats going to cost. Parts, and hours in labor?

The part is about 30 bucks and another member is replacing his also...Im sure he will chime in with some info for you.after the CPS is replaced you will have to get a CKP re-learn or also called a Case learn to make sure the sensor is alinged with the crank.

Re: Re: 97 Gtp randomly stalls

I just brought the car in to a local garage with this info. They dont quiet understand how that could be the problem. And they also said they dont have the tools to do the job. So now I have to go back to the dealership to get this done *sigh*. They did however plug it into the computer and found that the car fuel ratio is messed up. The car is burning 13% more fuel than it should be. The comptuer also found 2 transmission codes, not sure if its related but oh well. Also a new interesting development occured today. When the car was off the tach needle kept jumping up to a couple hundred rpm's and I can hear a clicking sound over my car speakers when i hit the brakes. Another thing that I noticed thats different from my problem vs the other folks having similiar problems is that i dont get the traction control light comming on. Not sure if that makes a difference or not, I do however get the check tire pressure gauge comming on randomly and when it does the steering gets more difficult. Any more thoughts before I go to the dealership and get rakes over the coals?

Re: 97 Gtp randomly stalls

Nos, I think you'll be better off doing it your self.
You should have a little time before it gets too bad. Mine went like that for a little over a year and it was a lot of hit and miss you know sometimes it would go two months without acting up but know she's dead.

Like Big-L said the part is app.30.00 @ autozone and he sent me directions and pics on the post "Someone please help me". Dealers and garages all scratched their heads and all told me "gee I dunno what the problem is" and I let them change out parts that probably weren't bad.
Just keep in mind that I believe this job can be done by yourself and also remimber I am by Know means a mech. Yet the only part I am haveing difficulty in is breaking the center bolt on the pulley loose. Please visit my post on the same thing and I didn't always have the tcs problem either.
I am not sure on the other problems but it does sound like your Crankshaft Position sensor is going out.

By the way I am the other member big-L was talking about

It's about a 2 hour job. Make sure you have a very long breaker bar to crack that center bolt on the harmonic balancer. You can borrower the balancer puller from your local parts store although it's only a $15 tool. You might consider replacing the Cam Position Sensor too while your there. Good luck.

Re: 97 Gtp randomly stalls

Is the cam position sensor near the crank shaft position sensor? And he might have some problems breaking that bolt loose with a breaker bar I know I did. big-L suggested a impact wrench.

I had an issue with my 97 GTP that would sometimes start, then stall after 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 15 minutes, etc.

It was not an issue with any of the sensors, etc. rather the fuel pump wiring/connectors needed attention. According to the dealer they had to replace the connectors at the fuel pump end and the underhood relay center end.

They said something about the fuel pump loosing its ground after the wires started to warm up.
